She glanced back toward where she had last seen Ferrero talking to a sixty-something man with a horseshoe of wispy white hair, but Ferrero had vanished. She scanned the rest of the pool area, but he was nowhere to be seen.

Cursing, she pushed herself away from the wall and slipped through the villas doors on the heels of one of the serving girls. The girl turned, and Harley plucked one of the smoked salmon rolls from the tray in the girls hand.

Missed my breakfast, she explained with a sheepish smile.

The girl smiled back stiffly. Whatever you need, she said in a practiced tone that suggested it was a phrase she had rehearsed many times.

Biting into the roll, Harley turned back toward the pool area. As soon as the serving girl had gone, however, she turned on her heel and entered the stairwell.

It occurred to her that she hadnt explored a tenth of the villa, and there was no telling where or when she might come across Ferrero. Callaways voice of caution spoke up in the back of her mind, warning her to wait. It would be safer to talk with Ferrero together. He looked volatile.

And yet, what if he was destroying evidence that very moment? How much of a head start would he get while she hesitated?

Suspecting Ferrero may have returned to Roth to resume their game of golf (while updating him on the doings of the FBI, perhaps), Harley climbed the stairs to the second floor.

The room was silent as she entered. Finding herself alone, she crossed to the balcony. This, too, was deserted. Returning to the first room, she noticed one of the oak doors open a crack. She pressed it further and stepped inside.

The room could have belonged in a little girls dollhouse. Everything was pink: pink bed, pink walls, pink dresser, pink carpet. A womans hairbrush, also pink, lay on the dresser, a plume of fine hairs curling out from it. The only object that stood out was the black bra half-folded over the dressers open drawer like a clue in a point-and-click mystery game.

A shiver ran down Harleys spine as she stared at the plush bed, which was clearly the main feature almost the only feature of the room. Does he dress them up as little girls, too? she thought.

Anything interesting? a voice behind her said.

Startled, Harley spun around to see Callaway standing in the doorway.

You scared the shit out of me, she said, her heart racing. Then she gestured at the room. Do you see this?

Callaways jaw flexed as he gave the room a once-over. She could see the anger simmering just beneath the surface, and she wondered what he had learned from the young woman.

Howd your conversation go? she said.

Lets just say, theres a good chance Ferrero is our guy. We need to find him.
