He detached himself from Harley, cutting across the pool and through an open doorway at the far side. Instead of turning right toward the restrooms, however, he turned left and slipped into the staff quarters. He stood by the door, listening to the hum of the building and thinking how much it was like a beehive, with numerous drones but only one queen.
Or, in this case, a king.
He smelled the girls perfume before she stepped through the doorway. She noticed him from the corner of her eye and flinched away, startled. When she got a better look at him, however, she relaxed.
Oh, sorry, she said, the whiteness of her teeth flashing in a smile. I didnt see you in the dark there. The restrooms are down that way. She pointed. The tattoo on her arm showed butterflies hovering over roses.
Actually I was looking for you, Callaway replied.
There was a subtle tightening of her facial muscles, almost too subtle to perceive in the dim lighting.
Callaway hastened to reassure her. Just to ask a few questions, he said. Nothing more.
She glanced uncertainly toward the pool area. I really shouldnt. He doesnt like us talking privately with the guests.
It was yet another sign of the mans power, Callaway realized. She didnt even need to say the mans name. Lawrence Roth was the only he on the property who mattered. And that was saying something, considering the caliber of his guests.
Callaway tried a different angle. Hows José doing? Still in rehab?
She blinked, her smile cracking. Officer Callaway?
Its Agent Callaway now. FBI. He shrugged as if to say it was of no great consequence.
He had hoped she would be reassured by a familiar face. She seemed to grow more agitated rather than less, however, shifting her weight and swallowing hard.
Please, she begged, I dont know anything. If Im seen talking to you…
Gently taking her by the elbow, Callaway steered her away from the door. Youll just tell your boss I got lost looking for the restroom and started getting a bit too friendly. He smiled gently. Were not here to arrest anyone. But three girls have been murdered in the area girls about your age and we need to find out what happened to them.
She took a deep, steadying breath, her face creasing with worry. What does that have to do with me?
Emily, right?
She nodded.
Do you know someone by the name of Candy Whitmore?
Emily nodded again, her face clearing a little. I know Candy. Is she in trouble?
We just need to talk with her. Any idea where we can find her?
The girl bit her lip. I havent seen her in a few days. I was surprised she didnt come in today.
There was a loud splash outside, followed by laughter. Emily glanced toward the door, worried. Callaway realized he didnt have much time.
