My cheeks flushed that he’d called me beautiful. There was a smile on his face that was a little bit cheeky and those eyes … They were so dark I felt like I could get lost in them. I tried to keep focused. He was still a naked stranger in my bed.

I grabbed a hairbrush off the chest of drawers next to me and held it threateningly.

‘This is my room,’ I repeated, although with less conviction. My fear was ebbing away, and it was swiftly being replaced with butterflies in my stomach.

He rubbed his eyes before he squinted and looked down at the pillow.

My cheeks were starting to flush again as my brain repeatedly tried to remind me that there was a naked man on my bed. I tried to give off an air that I wasn’t fazed by the situation and that this was totally normal, although in reality Scott was the only guy I’d seen naked. Scott. My cheeks flushed harder that I’d forgotten I had a boyfriend.

‘Where’s all my stuff? What have you done with it?’

‘I haven’t touched it. This is my room,’ I said again, putting the hairbrush down as with every passing second he was seeming like less of a threat. ‘These are the staff quarters. What part of the camp are you supposed to be in?’

‘Very funny. I’m staff too. This is my room.’

Every time I looked at him I noticed a different feature of his body. His abs. His muscular legs. His hands, which he kept running through that hair.

‘You are trespassing.’ I tried to keep my voice level and even but I was flustered and I think he knew it.

‘Trespassing? Oh, I get it. This is James or Douglas, isn’t it? I’ve heard about these kinds of tricks where they move all your stuff round when you’re out or asleep, just to freak people out. Where did you put it all? Don’t tell me they’ve put it in the pool?’

He moved a little on the bed and the cushion started to slip. My eyes widened as he grabbed it back just in time.

‘No one’s put your stuff anywhere. This is where I’ve been living since I came here three days ago.’

‘Will you two just try and keep it down?’ said Elizabeth, storming out of her room. She was dressed in a nightie and had her hair in a myriad of plaits. ‘Some of us are trying to sleep.’

The naked man looked at Elizabeth and then back to me.

‘Fuck, this really isn’t my bed, is it? There’s no way Elizabeth would be in on a joke.’
