‘Edie, your turn.’ Soph hands me the baseball cap with balled-up suggestions.

I get up and pick a piece of paper. I groan when I see it. Of all the movies to pick. Brett shouts, ‘Go’ as he starts the timer on his phone.

I start to mime a video camera.

‘Movie,’ yells Miles enthusiastically. ‘Four words … comedy.’

I wish I was as energetic as him. I start to act it out, pulling at my hair, and Miles is desperate to guess.

‘Hairspray … Rapunzel … Tangled …’

I rub my hands then pretend again to make a quiff in my hair. Miles looks blankly and I do it again.

‘Ace Ventura Pet Detective? I don’t know what this hairstyle is. What movies was Elvis in?’

Joel is trying not to laugh and I point an accusatory finger at him.

‘If you know, then share it with us, please.’ I’m clueless as to why Joel is being this difficult.

‘You’re not allowed to speak.’ He folds his arms and I take another deep breath. The other team are one point ahead; we need to get this.

I hold up four fingers and then wiggle my ear.

‘Fourth word,’ shouts Miles. ‘Sounds like …’

I point at his arms, wanting him to guess ‘hairy’ and Joel laughs again. I throw him a death stare. I’m convinced he knows the answer.

‘Arms … Biceps… Muscles?’ I point at the hair on Miles’s legs before I tug on one of the hairs in frustration. ‘Ow … Leg hair … Hair?’

I point and then move my hands further away from each other.

‘Hairy?’

I tap my nose and nod.

‘What rhymes with hairy? Scary … fairy … lairy … dairy.’

‘Ten seconds, guys.’

I do the quiff once more because I’m out of options.

‘There’s Something about Mary,’ says Joel, cool as a cucumber.

‘Finally.’ I sit down and give him a nudge. ‘Did you forget you were on our team?’

‘Nope, just didn’t want to miss out on you potentially trying to mime what she got in her hair.’ At his smirk, I roll my eyes.

Miles leans across to me. ‘Well done, Joel. Although it might have been easier, Edie, if you’d just mimed a halo and put your hands together in a prayer position for Mary.’

‘I’ll remember that for next time.’ I grit my teeth.

‘I thought you did a great job,’ says Soph. ‘Now, by my estimations I make that a tie. What shall we do? Sudden death? Someone’s name gets picked out of the hat and both teams guess.’

‘Sounds good,’ says Brett.

‘Does anyone mind if I quickly run to the shop before it closes to pick up some more of that fancy artisan lemonade?’ asks Douglas. ‘Something I never thought I’d hear myself saying on a Saturday night. Anyone else want anything?’

We all shake our heads and he runs off.
