- About the Publisher
‘Gosh, I haven’t thought about that in years,’ says Douglas. ‘We used to have this frisbee that glowed in the dark, and we’d wait until nightfall and play it out here. It had the same rules as Ultimate.’ Miles still looks blank. ‘Kind of like five-a-side football but with a frisbee.’
‘Remember those glow stick necklaces we used to put on?’ Soph leans over and picks at the last of the dessert.
Douglas nods. ‘Yes, that’s right. It was the only way to avoid bumping into everyone.’
‘Not that it worked; we always still ended up on the ground.’
‘Sounds like fun, shame we don’t have a frisbee tonight,’ says Brett.
Douglas shoots Miles a look. ‘You don’t have one of those lurking in your bag, do you?’
‘Sadly not.’
‘Perhaps we should organise another meet-up and play together,’ says Soph, still managing to scrape chocolate mousse out of the bowl that must be empty by now.
‘I’d love that,’ I say. ‘In fact, I’ve been thinking of inviting you guys up to mine for a visit, and there’s a park we could play in behind my block of flats. I’m sure I could rope in some other friends to fill up the teams.’
‘That would be amazing,’ says Soph. ‘I’m in. It’ll be nice to come up and see you.’
Everyone nods and a warm, fuzzy feeling passes over me.
There’s a wail from Alfie and Soph groans. She’s leant against Brett and the two of them look so comfortable. He goes to move just as she does.
‘Let me.’
I stand up and start rocking the pram back and forth on the spot. It doesn’t take long before Soph gives me the thumbs up.
‘I think he’s gone back to sleep.’
‘I’ll stay here for a bit, just in case.’
‘You look like such a natural. Don’t you think, Miles?’ Soph raises her eyebrows not very subtly.
‘Mmm-hmm,’ he says. Ever since that night in the pub, there’s been this elephant in the room we can’t seem to shake.
‘Hey, anyone up for playing a game?’ says Joel.
‘Yes,’ I say a little too quickly. I’m relieved of the change of subject.
‘I’ve got the perfect one,’ says Soph.
I point at her. ‘Do not say truth or dare.’
‘You still know me so well.’
‘How about charades?’ says Brett. ‘Could be fun.’
We all nod and agree and he sets about organising the game.
I don’t know how it happened but I end up on the same team as Miles and Joel. I’m sandwiched between the two of them and I just feel awkward … as to why, I’m not entirely sure. Ever since our conversation this morning, and now with Joel so close by, I feel very self-conscious of my relationship with Miles.
