- About the Publisher
We sing and do our best to dance to the song, but it’s not the same without the others. We’d always fling our sweaty arms around each other and jump up and down, all the while trying to make sure too many people didn’t step on our toes.
By the end of the song and our last final bit of air guitar, I’m ready to sit down, wishing that Soph and Douglas were here to dance with us, when a new song comes on. In an instant the whole mood on the dance floor changes. The subtle beat of the slow song kicks in and couples drift together.
Joel doesn’t have to tell me that this was his choice.
‘“Lady in Red”?’ I haven’t heard this in forever.
He takes a step closer towards me and puts one hand on my waist and grabs hold of my hand with his other. I rest my other hand on his shoulder. We start to move to the slow beat; it’s awkward at first but we soon relax into it.
‘I can’t believe you picked this.’
‘I panicked, it’s the only song that I could always remember the ents team always played.’
When we worked at Hartland’s we all wore our red logo-emblazoned polo shirts and at least once a night the entertainment team would play ‘Lady in Red’ and dedicate it to the female members of staff. Most of the time if I was with Soph, she’d slip her arm around my shoulder and we’d sway to it, but sometimes Douglas or Joel would pull me onto the dance floor. I secretly always wished it was Joel.
If I close my eyes it all comes flooding back to me. How his touch would send shivers down my spine and make my stomach flutter with butterflies. My whole body aching for him.
The two of us are drifting closer and his hand closes around mine a little bit tighter and it’s like he remembers it too. Our bodies are almost pressed together and I’m sure he’ll be able to feel how rapidly my heart is beating.
‘Was this song always this slow?’ he asks, practically whispering it in my ear.
‘Always,’ I reply.
Our cheeks are touching, just like the song sings about, and neither of us moves away. I’ve never felt a pull to anyone like I have with Joel. I thought over the years that I’d imagined it, but I can still feel it. He adjusts his hand on my back and it drops a little lower and the whole of my body shudders with anticipation.
