No one else on the dance floor is batting an eyelid as we have a dance-off with silly moves, and we dance until the point where we can’t dance any more. We go over to a table in the corner and take a seat. This time when we sit down, we unconsciously sit just that little bit closer.

‘You know, I’m going to regret those moves tomorrow. I bet I pulled a muscle,’ says Joel. ‘With those shapes, I’m not surprised I didn’t have much luck with the ladies on the dance floor.’

‘Well, whizzing about with that mower, you would have mowed them right down.’

‘That’s true; when that mower gets started, you better watch out,’ he says, laughing. ‘I can’t believe we used to dance like that.’

‘I can’t believe we stopped dancing like that. Look how much fun that was.’

My cheeks are aching from laughing, my heart is beating and my muscles like Joel’s are sore, but I can’t remember when I had so much fun.

‘I’m going to do this more often.’

‘What dodgy dance moves at discos?’

‘No, let myself go.’

‘Not take yourself too seriously?’

I look at him for a moment wondering where he got that from before I realise I said it to him to get him on the dance floor.

‘Exactly. That’s how you live your life, isn’t it? You live in the moment and you do what you want to do?’

He shrugs. ‘I try to, but it’s not a shit or bust scenario. You don’t have to be jetting off, living the high life. You can live in the moment wherever you are and whatever you’re doing.’

Joel’s looking at me and the laughter seems to have been forgotten and it’s been replaced by some kind of seriousness.

‘It must be nice living a life where you don’t have regrets.’

‘Everyone has regrets, Edie, especially me,’ he says, leaning in closer. I can feel his breath on my neck causing me to shiver.

We sit for a while in silence, watching the people on the dance floor, but I’m busy wondering what regrets Joel has.

The guitar riff of the next song puts a smile on my face.

‘This is what you requested, isn’t it?’ says Joel as ‘Mr Brightside’ starts to play.

‘It was this or the “Cha-Cha Slide”.’

‘I’m eternally grateful you didn’t pick that.’

Joel stands up and holds his hand out to me.

‘For a person who didn’t want to dance at all,’ I say, taking hold of his hand.

He shrugs. ‘Seems like it would be rude not to.’ He leads me to a space on the dance floor.
