She gets a mischievous gleam in her eyes. “I like saying it while you’re hooked up to that thing. I get to watch your heartbeat pick up.”

“No fair,” I say, my face growing warm.

“Just curious to see what happens if I…” She drags her finger along my hand up to the edges of my tattoo, tracing it, before slipping it north, along my exposed collarbone. All the while, my heart is thudding almost painfully in my chest. She presses in closer to me, her lips hovering over mine, and despite the dull ache at the back of my head, my heart races as my lips capture hers. After a moment, she steps back, breathless.

“I think you’ll be juuust fine, Micah Allen. Everything’s working right from where I’m standing.” And with that, she skips out to find the nurse, leaving me to listen as my heartbeat slows to normal levels.

Meg

Today has been the best day of my life for two reasons:

  1. Micah came home from the hospital.
  2. Vada is here.

Having my two very most favorite people in the same room at the same time is the equivalent to my heart exploding into fireworks of more hearts. Micah’s mom just left after dropping off half a dozen pizzas and some soda. Micah ended up having to stay three nights at Marquette General for observation. He’s got an incredibly thick skull that thankfully didn’t crack, but definitely swelled and bruised dangerously, and he needed an emergency blood transfusion.

That meant I spent three nights sleeping in his bed and taking care of Cash. My most favorite dog of all time. Every time I think about what could have happened if he hadn’t heard my calls … if he hadn’t been there …

I die inside.

I would have stayed at the hospital, but his mom wanted to be there. I get that. She was first. And she’s going through some stuff for sure. I can’t even imagine. Her ex-husband nearly killed her son.

Micah’s dad is back in the county jail, awaiting sentencing for breaking his parole and also assault and battery for attacking Micah. I went to see him yesterday. I didn’t tell anyone, but I wanted him to know Micah made it out okay and was coming home. I can’t say I have much love for the guy, but I thought he deserved the update after, well … after nothing, I suppose. Maybe he would have run for help given enough time. I want to think that’s the case. Micah needs to think that’s the case. But we’ll never be sure.

And besides, if Duke went, he’d probably murder the guy and ruin his future and then he’d never get into U of M.
