“It was more than that,” Helen said. “It was the third Saturday in October.”
At this, Bo smiled. “My first Alabama-Tennessee game.”
“At Legion Field,” Helen said, her voice dripping with bitterness. “The Football Capital of the South.” She sneered at him. “Or so it was written on the side of the stadium.”
“You were there?”
“I was indeed,” she said. “I remember pointing out to the friend I was with that I knew number forty-three out there. Bocephus Haynes from Giles County High, Pulaski, Tennessee.”
“I was a freshman, so I didn’t play much in the game.”
“They didn’t need you. Twenty-four to ten Bama was the final score as I recollect.”
Bo nodded. “Good memory. Where are you going with this, General? Chief Storm said that the sheriff’s department’s investigation reveals that you had an abortion in 1977 and that’s the motive for you killing Butch. Did you have an abortion?”
Helen returned her focus to the walls. “I’m going to tell it my way. If you don’t want to hear it, then you can get the hell out. Your choice.”
Bo crossed his arms and sighed. “I’m still here.”
“I was dating Butch at the time of the Tennessee-Bama game, but we were fighting. It was my third year of law school, and he was angry that I had been spending too much time studying and not enough time with him. He had graduated from law school by then and was a second-year associate at a firm in Nashville. He wanted me to come there to watch the game with him, but I said no. A girlfriend said that her sister at Alabama had gotten great seats to the game, and I thought a trip away would be good for me.
“We had a great time. Even though the Vols lost the game, it was fun hanging out with some younger people who weren’t perpetually stressed out. My friend’s sister had brought a flask of whiskey into the game, and we had several Jack Daniel’s and Cokes before the clock struck zero. By that time, we had a nice buzz, and my friend’s sister’s group was heading to a bar next to the stadium called the Tide & Tiger.”
Helen paused and her lip began to tremble. “I was having a good time. There were some guys in the group, but so what? I hadn’t done anything wrong.” She folded her arms tight across her chest. “I shouldn’t feel guilty about going, but even now, I still do.”
“What happened?” Bo asked, his voice soft. He’s starting to see where this is going, Helen thought.
