  88. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“I heard about a fire but didn’t know you were involved,” Terry said, smiling again.

“Tell me something, Terry. When your wife asks if you’ve been stepping out on her, do you smile that same smile when you lie to her? Or how about when your doctor asks about the rash you keep getting on your balls or the purple tint to your lips? Herpes is a bitch, ain’t it?”

Terry made a tent with his hands and placed them on his stomach. “Are we done here, Bo? I have other cars to sell.”

“No, we’re not done. I know about the prostitution ring. I know all about it. Some of those old strippers at the Sundowners Club have loose lips, and one of them just so happens to work for me now. Clandestine Sunday afternoons at the old Sands Motor Court. A little swimming. A few cocktails. A line of coke. And finishing things off with a nice pickle tickle or two. Sound familiar?”

Terry’s smile had faded into a toothless grimace, as if he was trying to pass gas and hadn’t succeeded yet. “I’d like you to leave. And I think I’m going to forgo leasing you that car.”

“Oh, really. Well, the first thing I’m going to do when I get back in the display area is tell everyone there that you told me that you wouldn’t sell a car to a nigger. Then I’m going to go live on Facebook. Ever heard of going live? My son and daughter do it all the time. It drives me crazy. But yeah, Terry, I’m going to go live and tell all of my friends what a racist organization this is. Might even set up an exclusive with Aldos Stanley of the Pulaski Citizen. How’d that be?” Bo rose from his seat and walked to the door. As he grasped the knob, he spoke without looking at Terry. “I think you’re dirty, Terry. You ran whores in this county for two decades while maintaining your squeaky-clean image, and I’m planning on telling this county exactly who Terrence Robert Grimes really is.”

“I’ll sue you for every dime you own.”

Bo finally turned and looked over his shoulder at the car salesman. “Truth is an absolute defense to slander.” He smiled. “I know this because I’m a lawyer. At the trial of Helen Lewis, Pulaski is finally going to know all about your sins.”

“Even if you could prove what you’re talking about, how in the world would any of that be relevant to Butch’s murder?”

Bo grinned. “I don’t know, Terry. You were the one who found him dead, weren’t you? You’re the one who called the police. You’re the one whose fingerprints are found all over his house.”

“I was his neighbor, and he was my friend.”
