  88. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sack held out his palms. “Beats me. But let’s not look a gift horse in the mouth. You know how this county feels about abortion.”

Gloria folded her arms across her chest. “Did you leak it?”

Before Sack could answer the question, the door to the district attorney general’s office swung open. Chief Deputy Sheriff Frannie Storm strode through with a look of contempt on her face. “Are you the mole?” Frannie asked, pushing past Gloria and walking around the desk to stand in front of Sack.

“I don’t know what—?”

“Answer me!” Frannie said, grabbing Sack around the collar and pulling the man to his feet. “Did you give the Vine information about the press release we found at Butch’s house?”

“No,” Sack said, his voice struggling to remain calm. “Now take your hands off me, Chief, or I will file an assault charge against you.”

“Go for it,” Frannie said, releasing her grip and taking a step back. She whirled toward Gloria. “Do you know anything about this?”

“No,” Gloria said, feeling heat on her neck and face. “I’m as mad about it as you.”

Frannie made a fist with her right hand and punched the palm of her left so hard that the popping sound caused Gloria to jump. “I’m going to find out who the mole is, and when I do, I’m going to cut his balls off, put them in a jar, and throw it in the Elk River.”

“That’s kind of a sexist thing to say, isn’t it?” Sack asked, faking a smile.

“Fuck you,” Frannie said, turning to leave. “Got a minute, Sanchez?”

Out in the hallway, Frannie spoke through clenched teeth. “He’s loving it, isn’t he?”

“Like a pig in mud,” Gloria said.

“Do you have any ideas about who leaked the letter?”

Gloria glanced at the door and then back to Frannie. “The jackass in there is the one who benefits the most.”

Frannie started to move for the door again, but Gloria blocked her. “Don’t, OK? It won’t help.” Gloria paused.

The chief squinted down at her. “Are you going to be second chair on this trial?”

Gloria bit her lip. “We haven’t discussed assignments yet, but . . .” She trailed off.

“But what?”

Gloria opened her mouth but closed it before saying anything. Her face had grown pale.

“What’s wrong, Sanchez?”

Gloria averted her eyes, gazing upward at the top of the rotunda. “It’s just that I, um, doubt I’m going to have a job here much longer. The rumor is that Sack is going to clean house as soon as the interim tag is removed.” She sighed. “Ironic, isn’t it? If we’re successful in convicting General Lewis, then I’m out of a job.”
