In accord with the triumph of feminism, or “personism” as it was now called, men and women began to dress identically. Difference in garments was now regarded as discriminatory. Masculinity in men was discouraged, and cartooned in the press. It was equated, by a brilliant, if puzzling, feminist ploy with nonmasculinity, or homosexuality. The only “true men” became those who fulfilled feminist criteria. So, too, femininity was an object of contempt. The only “true women” became those who were least female. There were only “persons.” Men were encouraged to be gentle, submissive, docile, ingratiating, kind, and to smile often and be pleasant; women were encouraged, whether they felt it natural or not, to be outspoken, hostile, obnoxious, vicious and aggressive. The idea was to produce a person, something which would be a neuter compromise. Men, encouraged to imitate a foolish stereotype of woman, and women, trying to imitate a foolish stereotype of man, were supposed, by these hopefully convergent efforts, to produce in themselves a sexual nothing, the much-desired “person.” Neurosis, of course, became rampant in society. Biology, dwarfed and warped by conditionings, as it may be, took its vengeance in illness, anxiety and disease. The aliens, accordingly, have little difficulty in raiding the Earth for slaves. The population of Earth is largely helpless. Masculine pursuits like defense, armament, and weaponry were abolished as immoral. Technology was turned into channels which took men’s eyes from the stars, and turned them to the improvement of labor-saving devices, the beautification of parks, and the multiplication and improvement of vast public nurseries, etc., on earth. As technology deteriorated the Earth fell to the status of a tenth-rate planet, becoming, in effect, a source of slaves for more advanced, more vigorous peoples, still expanding imperialistically, adventurously, in the galaxy. The aliens are invulnerable. The feminized Earthlings lack even space travel. They managed to do little more than touch, once or twice, their own moon, and that long ago. They now, thus, for all practical purposes, lie at the mercy of stronger, more effective species.
Let us suppose that the captured Earth female, taken to the breeding farm, somehow, manages to escape, managing to pass the fence, the force field, the patrol vehicles. Perhaps, desperate, she effected her escape on the evening prior to her being chained for insemination in one of the numbered mating stalls.
In being herded, running, with some two hundred other naked girls, her herd, to the feeding troughs, under the whips and slave goads of the aliens, she noted a patrol vehicle, within the fence. Lifting her face from the feeding trough, itself a punishable offense, she notes its driver is engaged in conversation with one of the guards. She works her way down the feeding trough, beneath it, between the girls on either side, her herd and another herd, and manages, crawling, to slip beneath the vehicle; she then rests her body on the bars of its substructure. Girls so seldom escape; no one notices her. Even her fellow slave females do not notice her; they fear to lift their faces from the feeding trough; the whistle has not yet blown; they do not wish a whipping.1 That night the vehicle goes on its patrol and, when the alien leaves it, perhaps to chew mim weed, a mildly intoxicating plant, she slips free and runs.
