It is my suspicion that a whole human life requires elements of both reality and fantasy. We are fond of both rocks and flowers. We wish to have our feet on the ground but, too, sometimes, we like to play. The recommendations of square sex for the almost inevitable development of boredom in marriage are often trivial. For example, try a new position. The value of a new position, of course, is the accompanying mental stimulation. Physiologically the body is content with the old. Square sex is on to something here though, the need for mental stimulation, for difference. It is only that its concept of what is stimulating is simplistic. It is probably the case that making love on the floor at the foot of the bed would be even more stimulating. I would think so. Use of a different bed, or a different room, is probably more stimulating. Making love on the rug in the middle of the living room before the picture window with the drapes open at midnight would probably be even more stimulating. Square sex usually doesn’t think in such terms. And never does it think in terms of the same people being different people, being new and fresh to one another, being related to one another in novel or bizarre, sexually charged situations. Let us suppose that the sleepy bites of lethargy have now begun to gnaw into a marriage. It is then time, if not before, for the couple to give some thought to imaginative sex. The justification of imaginative sex, like that of chess and music, is the joy and pleasure it gives. It can also, however, save marriages, provide a healthy release for the natural elements of hostility and aggression in human beings, and produce love. These are not inconsiderable accomplishments. On the other hand, its raison d’être is pleasure, simply that, exquisite and delightful psychosexual pleasure.
