On the wilder borderlines of square sex, one is encouraged, for variety, to try new positions. Once again sex comes to be seen in terms of pullies and levers. The knowledge that there could be a sexual position in which the female is not held under the male comes as quite a naughty shock to many people. Such people are improved by such shocks. The standard sexual position, woman under, of course, is not the easiest sexual position, nor does it provide maximum penetration. It is actually a rather difficult position, which accounts, doubtless, for many agonizing moments in young males who are making love to their first girl. One can sympathize with him because he has been conditioned to believe that is how it is done, and whereas it can be done that way, that is certainly not the easiest. That it becomes easy after practice and experience, of course, is not so much a reflection of its simplicity as of the value of practice and experience. The reason that the woman-under position is the standard sexual position is psychological, not physical. It deals with something very deep and basic, which is likely to be shocking to some women and offensive to others. The matter is species relative. In the spiders, for example, the female is large and dominant. In the humans, it is the male which is large and, unless crippled by conditioning, dominant. In our species it is the smaller, more sleek female who is natural quarry and game. This is standard among the primates. This does not mean that the female is passive. She, too, has needs. She often provokes the male to her hunt. The symbolic aspect of the standard sexual position is, upon reflection, devastatingly obvious. In it the female is permitted very little movement. In it she is most a prisoner. She has been caught. There is no escape for her. She lies there, on her back, pinned down by her captor, looking into his eyes, awaiting her rape. It is likely that the standard sexual position will remain standard.
