Square sex is the sort of thing that the polite psychiatrist will charge for for recommending to his clients. It is marriage-manual sex. The ideal sexual episode I gather, from a recent best seller by a now affluent psychiatrist, consists of three layers. Freudians are fond of layers, doubtless a Germanic heritage from the master. The first layer consists of twenty minutes of foreplay in which the male is encouraged to rub his partner’s body in prescribed fashions; the second layer, commendably, consists of a bit of fellatio-cunnilingus; and the third layer consists of penetration and intercourse, normally ranging from fifty pumps in five minutes to one hundred pumps in ten. The concept seems very scientific, and might have done credit to Archimedes or Hiero of Syracuse. Sex tends to be seen in terms of erogenous zones, manipulations, applied pressures, and various principles of pneumatics and hydraulics. I have nothing against hydraulics. We are, as a matter of fact, complex physical systems. We are also, however, people. Square sex is a step on the road to human sex. It reminds us that we have bodies. On the other hand, few of us had forgotten that.
