As she found herself blocked time after time by a lack of information, she feared that she was just going to have to eat three or four hours. It wouldnt be so bad, she supposed. She could go back to the hotel and get some more sleep and call the people-of-interest right away.
Hey, Rachel, did you see any of this earlier today? Jack asked.
She looked up from her notes and saw that he was thumbing through a file folder. A small sticky note was affixed to the front of it. Someone had written For Dep. Stanhope on the front of it.
What is it? she asked.
Not sure. Its looks like a list of random cases at first. Bullet-points and names, things like that. But it was with Stanhopes notes from our cross-referencing today. Im guessing he had someone dig up recent cases that may have involved sick people. Maybe he just got it late. Lets see…
He set the file down and typed a case number into the database. The three pages of reports that popped up told them a sad story of someone that had been arrested for attempting to steal insulin from a pharmacy back in 2019. The man had not been armed, had gone to court, and paid a three-thousand dollar fine. The man was diabetic and could not afford the outrageous prices for his insulin so, having had enough, decided to try bullying a pharmacist for it. The tale was told in brief sentences, bullet points, and just a few lines of testimony from a pharmacist.
Jesus, Rachel said. How many of those are there?
Not many. Seven in all. But Im guessing whoever made the list had a reason for compiling them.
That said, he continued inserting case numbers into the database. As he did this, Rachel looked over the small list. None of them went back more than three years. Two of them indicated that the person responsible for the crime was currently in prison. I think its safe to skip these, Rachel said pointing to those two cases.
Yeah, okay, Jack said distantly. Hey, I need you to Google a name for me.
Whats the name?
Joseph Quinn. Hes a surgeon that apparently assaulted the family member of a patient. Ive got the report here and it…it really doesnt make much sense.
She typed the name into the Google app on her phone, adding Roanoke, VA, into the search terms. She got over one hundred hits and though the headlines of the first few gave a pretty good snapshot of why hed been listed in a police database, she read the first article she came to. She read it out loud and the deeper she got into the article, the straighter she sat up.
