She bit the laughter back, realizing it was the first genuine laughter shed allowed herself over the past four or five days. And while it felt incredible, she also knew that such moments were going to be few and far between in the coming months. So she let it sink in and joked back and forth with Jack in that small window of time as they waited for another policeman to show up as their relief.
CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR
Rachel watched Jack rush through the front doors to get a precinct car to go check in on his assigned person from the trio off of the transplant listan older man by the name of Percy Wilson. She pulled away from the curb and started speeding to the address shed selectedthe address of Seth Dillinger.
According to his record, hed been arrested and charged for sexual misconduct eight years ago. Hed met a woman at a bar, gave her a ride home and theyd messed around in his car. When she failed to invite him inside to keep things going, he did not take no for an answer at first. He did not rape the woman, but only because she was able to fight away from him and unlock the power doors in his pickup truck. Shed fallen out to the street with a bruise on her wrists and hips from the skirmish in his truck.
That was all Rachel knew about the incident and, quite frankly, it seemed pretty cut and dry. Shed seen nothing about jail time served and assumed Dillinger was like a surprising number of men in that positionso scared over the repercussions hed faced that he did everything to avoid such a moment again. Of course, she also had to rely on the knowledge that most murderers did tend to have at least some form of criminal activity in their past, often small and seemingly insignificant.
She thought all of this through as she made her way to Dillingers address, a small subdivision that looked as if it were one step away from being little more than a trailer park. It was the sort of dainty neighborhood that tried a bit too hard to look much more refined than it actually was. The lawns were mostly green and well-kept but most of the houses told a different story.
Rachel came to Seth Dillingers address and parked. When she stepped outside, she found the street quiet, aside from a barking dog somewhere in the distance. A small Ford pickup truck sat in the driveway, parked in front of a small, closed garage. She peered in through the passenger side window and saw nothing out of the ordinary: an empty soda bottle, a phone charger cord, a balled-up burger wrapper on the floorboard. It was the sort of old truck that made it hard to tell if it was used all of the time or hardly ever used and was severely neglected.
