Hed changed in this room countless times and knew that spare scrub sets were kept in one of the little closets in the back corner. He walked over to it, hoping theyd changed nothing, and was relieved to find that it was all the same. He grabbed a set of scrubs, the cheaper kind that were pressed and sealed in a thin plastic bag and changed in one of the small dressing cubicles. It felt all too familiar, as if the years between his last time volunteering and now had passed by in the blink of an eye. He missed it more than he realized, the full feeling of that loss falling firmly into place as he stepped out of the cubicle in his scrubs.
As he left the room, he walked with his head down at an angle. He knew the number of volunteers in the hospital were limited. The chances that someone would see him and realize that he was a new face was fairly high. So he looked down, making his way to the elevators. He knew that anyone rushed in with a serious condition, hauled in an ambulance, would be taken to the second floor ICU at firsteven if only for five minutes before they were moved elsewhere.
So thats exactly where he headed. All he needed was a weapon. And if he could keep his wits about him, he knew where to go for that as well.
Dont you overthink this, you idiot.
He truly hoped that when this was all over, the voice would stop. That hope was more than enough to help him push the nerves aside and to approach this coming murder with anticipation and excitement. By the time the elevators dinged as they reached the second floor, he realized that he hadnt been this anxious to kill ever since hed started.
With a bit of a hurried spring in his step, he got off the elevator and headed in search of Seth Dillinger…and something to kill him with.
CHAPTER TWENTY SIX
Jack parked the basic sedan in front of the residence of Madeline Holcomb exactly seventeen minutes after leaving the station. Between the station and the Holcomb residence, hed gotten the call from Rachel, updating him on the status of one of the other people from the list. Apparently, Seth Dillinger was on his way to the hospitalwhich, as far as Jack was concerned, pretty much ruled him out as their killer. But it also told him that they were really starting to weed the list down. One of two things were going to happen by the days end: either theyd find the killer thanks to the list, or discover that the list may have absolutely nothing to do with the case at all. Though even Jack at his most discouraged and negative had to admit that it did seem as if the transplant list was the core to this entire case.
