While everyone worked in a flurry, it all seemed to go by slowly. Rachel assumed it was because they were all bogged down with the knowledge that there was an active killer out there, perhaps even planning his next attack, while they were sitting in the station behind phones. An announcement was made whenever a name was crossed from the list and within forty-five minutes, they had the list whittled down to just sixteen potential names. It was around this time, roughly forty-five minutes in, when Stanhopes voice spoke up above the din, louder than usual.

I think Ive got a hot ticket here!

He came walking around the cubicle walls with a laptop in his hand. He set it down on the desk Rachel and Jack were using, the screen showing a plain-looking Caucasian mans mugshot. Rachel scanned the preliminary information and recognized the name right away. She had, after all, scanned over it roughly fifty times in the past hour or so.

Daniel Robinson, Stanhope said. Arrested twice in the past seven years: once for breaking and entering, once for assault. The assault charge involved an attempted stabbing, and he did six months in prison for it. And he just happens to be the twentieth name on the list.

Rachel was up at once, surprised to find that she felt almost guilty for leaving the local PD to run the rest of the phone-related tasks. Jack joined her, giving Stanhope a congratulatory back. Good work, Deputy. Can you text us that address?

You know, I think Id like to come with you.

Rachel and Jack shared a quick glance, not long enough to come off as rude, but long enough for Stanhope to notice.

I know, I know, he said. Local PD cramping your style and all that. but I know the city like the back of my hand and besides that, if this ends up being your guy, youd need local PD presence before its all said and done, anyway.

Rachel had never liked it when local PD tagged along but she also knew that there was a bit of logic to Stanhope coming along. Also, there was no sense in wasting time arguing about it. So Rachel put on her best cooperative smile and nodded toward the exit.

Lead the way.

Stanhope did, and gladly. Rachel and Jack followed him out of the precinct as several officers continued to make calls behind them, making sure they trimmed down the transplant list as much as possible.

CHAPTER TWELVE

The only awkward moment in heading to the suspects residence with Stanhope was the fact that they took his patrol car, and Jack sat in the back. Rachel couldnt help herself when she smiled glibly at him through the cross work of iron between the front and back seats. Jack responded in kind, flashing his middle finger when Stanhope has his head turned.
