Is that the hospital he was at on the day he
Yes, Tommy interrupted quickly, not wanting to hear the end of the question.
You said most of them, Rachel said. Are there doctors listed there that arent in that same hospital.
Yeah, just one. Ive got a specialist. Dr. Fenton, at Harbour Medical Group.
Fenton? Jack asked. It sounded familiar. It took a few seconds for it to click but he then remembered Deputy Stanhope filling them in at the scene of Maria Ramirezs murder. Shed been visiting with a specialist named Dr. Fenton.
He and Rachel shared a knowing look, coming to the same conclusion at the same time. Both victims had visited Dr. Fenton, likely meaning that Maria Ramirez also had some sort of liver problem.
Do you have any dates? Rachel asked. Can you see the last time your father visited Dr. Fenton?
Um…hold on, hold on…yeah. Two months ago. I think it might have been about the transplant list but Im not sure. Moms notes arent exactly the clearest thing.
Tommy, this may turn out to be a huge help, Rachel said. Thanks so much.
Absolutely. I want this solved just as much as anyone.
Well be in touch, Rachel said, and then ended the call.
And then, in a complete role reversal, she pulled up the directions to Harbour Medical Groupthe place where Maria Ramirez had diedto make a second visit. And now with the name of a doctor to speak with, Jack sped as he followed the robotic voice. He kept an eye on Rachel when he could. She was still wincing, still gazing out of the window or at her phone as if her mind might be somewhere else.
For perhaps the first time since hed known Rachel, Jack found that he was starting to truly worry about herbut had no idea what he could do to help.
CHAPTER EIGHT
Rachel was rather surprised at the simplicity of the parking lot when they reached Harbour Medical Group. It was a basic rectangular shape that offered no real hiding spots for anyone trying to sneak around. For a killer to have attacked Bruce Webber in such an open space, they would have had to have been confident and reckless. That, or theyd scoped the place out very well for a few days beforehand. It offered up a creepy feeling as Jack parked in front of the building. It was a modern-looking place, the windows and edges sleek, the paintjob a blend of whites, grays, and soft blues.
