No one that sticks out, no. I mean, I have a pretty shady past, Ill admit. Im sure some might see whats happened to me over the past few years as a form of karma or whatever, but
The door opened behind them, and Rachel watched as a nurse entered. It was a male nurse, wearing a smile on his face, the same sort of smile Rachel assumed most nurses wore when they met a new patient for the first time. He looked from Dillinger and then to Rachel, confused.
Oh, Im so sorry. I didnt know he already had a visitor.
Its okay, Rachel said. Just give us one more moment, would you?
The nurse nodded rather nervously and the way he flinched away when he gave Rachel a quick once-over made her take notice. When his eyes saw her holstered Glock on her waist, his eyes went wide for just a moment, but he kept his composure. She understood it, she supposed; the last thing a nurse expected to see in the room of their patient was an armed visitor.
FBI, Rachel explained almost apologetically.
Ah, yes, okay.
Again, his eyes trailed to her gun, and she was quite sure she saw a flicker of fear in his eyes when shed mentioned that she was with the FBI. When he started making his way over to Dillinger, he looked a little shaken. Hed come in confident but now, after having found a visitor already in the room and then seeing her weapon, he was flustered. Not just that, he was scared. His scrubs looked clean and fresh. Something was settled down in his right pants pocket, something shiny that barely stuck out of the pocket. Below that, she noticed that he wore a pair of cheap-looking sneakers. They werent filthy by any means, but there were signs of dirt on them. More than that, they didnt look comfortable at all. Didnt most nurses wear very comfortable shoes, some even resorting to those weird-looking Croc shoes?
Sir? Rachel said. Can I please get your name?
He took another step toward the side of Dillingers bed. His hand briefly started to lift up to the pocket with the shiny thing in it. It was curved at the top, and a dull silver in color. By the time Rachel thought it might be a scalpel, the man took one more huge stride toward Dillinger.
No, stop right there, Rachel demanded.
The nurse let out a little moan, his face scrunching up. And in a flash so fast that Rachel hardly even saw it, he raced to the end of the bed heading for the door. Rachel took a hard sprint to cut him off but missed him by about half a second. When she redirected, she saw that he was already at the door, pulling it open and rushing out into the hallway.
Rachel gave one final glance to Seth Dillinger and followed after him.
