He nodded and though it was clear he wanted to say something else, he remained quiet. The silence remained between them until the elevator came to a stop and they both stepped out. They came to Fentons office and knocked on the closed door.

Come in, replied a soft-spoken voice from the other side.

Jack opened the door and they stepped inside to find a man of about fifty or so sitting behind a large oak desk. He was parked in front of a laptop and had several thick folders and binders stacked to his right. His graying hair was slicked back in a way that made him look a bit younger than he probably was.

Agents, he said. I feel quite sure I know why youre here but Im afraid Ill be of little help.

Well, we are happy for any help we can get, Rachel said. Im sure the police told you about Bruce Webber being murdered out in the parking lot, correct?

Yes. Such a terrible, terrible tragedy. As Im sure you likely know, hed just had success being placed on a transplant list.

Is that what the appointment was for? Jack asked.

Among other things. Mr. Webbers situation was becoming rather dire, so I was wanting to keep a check on him as often as possible. Quite frankly, it was getting to the point where I was thinking of passing him on to a colleague of mine that has a very good success rate with cases that are reaching the terminal point.

Theres one more thing were curious about, Jack said. You recently gave a consult to a woman name Maria Ramirez. Does that name sound familiar to you?

It does, he said. He seemed a bit more interested now, as if he could tell things were about to take an odd turn.

And while we know you cant give out specific medical information, can you at least tell us the outcome? Did you send her somewhere else?

Yes. I sent her to Dr. Ailsworth over at the hospital. Her case, while rather alarming, hadnt reached a place where I would have been able to help her just yet. I believed Dr. Ailsworth would have potentially been able to treat her so that she may not even have needed my services.

Dr. Fenton, did you know that Maria was also killed?

What? he asked, his eyes wide with shock, his mouth curling into a disbelieving frown. When?

The reaction seemed genuine. The shock was apparent in his eyes and his mouth seemed to be struggling on the right expression to land on.

The day before yesterday, Rachel said. She was coming out of the hospital, but we dont quite know why. Getting information from her family has been pretty much impossible. However, we do know now, because of what youve just said, that both she and Bruce Webber were seeing not only you, but Ailsworth as well.

This is…I dont understand.
