Rachel took off at a sprint for the elevators. She still wasnt quite sure where the rush of certainty was coming froma certainty that even though Dillinger was clearly not the killer at this point, there was something brewing here. Her mind kept going back to the idea that the killer had some sort of insider information. If hed been able to get his hands on the transplant list, perhaps there was much more he could get. If he had some sort of connections, it wasnt even all that difficult to imagine him being able to know when someone was being rushed to the hospital. And perhaps most importantly, theyd also know that if a patient was rushed to the hospital and the situation was a life-or-death matter, that patient could very likely be ushed up the transplant list. And based on what they knew of the killer so far, that could very well be a trigger.
Rachel took the elevators up to the third floor and then took a right down the long hallway. As she neared Dillingers room, she spotted a doctor and a nurse conversing not too far away from his room. She stopped alongside them, once again took out her ID, and introduced herself.
Im here to keep a check on Seth Dillinger. Theres a very good chance he may be in danger. Ill be stationed outside of his room for a while, until local PD send someone to replace me. Can you give me an update?
The doctor eyed her ID with heavy scrutiny before nodding slowly. Is this really necessary?
I assure you it is. Then, lowering her voice, she said, Three people have already been killed in the past five daysall of whom were on a transplant list. Someone at the hospital should have been called and
Yes, yes, Im so sorry. I do remember that memo going out. The doctor sighed heavily and have her a defeated nod. Thats fine. Now, will you need to speak with him?
That would be incredibly helpful. Is he coherent right now?
Yes. Well, perhaps. Given the situation, Id allow it.
And what about Mr. Dillinger? What can you tell me about his history?
The doctor gave her another of his strained looks. She knew he was likely trying to figure out how muchif anyhe should tell her based on the dichotomy of the doctor-patient relationship.
Mr. Dillinger has had issues with his liver for several years, brought on by hepatitis. Right now, he is stable and receiving intravenous medicine to keep toxins out of his bloodstream. Hell likely be discharged in two or three days if his body responds well to the meds.
But he is coherent right now?
Yes, but fairly weak. If you must speak with him, please keep it brief.
Of course. Thank you.
