‘Bullshit!’ She upends the table, sending the coffee cups scurrying towards Tom. He yelps as it splashes over his legs and pushes back his chair, scrabbling to stand up. Jenna gets up too. They face each other, the upended table between them.
Jenna braces herself. This is where Tom loses his temper and hits her. If he does then screw her promise to Kate. She’ll shout it from the rooftops.
But Tom doesn’t hit her. Instead, he rights his armchair, tips the table back into position, mops up the mess and removes the mugs to the kitchen. Then he disappears into a back room for a couple of minutes and reappears in a clean, dry pair of trousers. He retakes his chair and looks questioningly at Jenna, still standing beside her chair with her hands clenched at her sides.
‘Shall we continue?’
To Jenna’s horror, she bursts into tears.
Tom pushes the box of tissues across the table at the exact moment Jenna reaches for one. Her fingers slide over his and she pulls her hand away sharply.
‘Sorry.’
‘Don’t be.’
He’s still sitting forward in his seat, his hand resting lightly on the tissues. His gaze doesn’t waver as their eyes meet. He looks straight at her, into her. She can feel him rooting around in her brain, reading her thoughts.
‘Why did you do that?’
It takes her several seconds to process which ‘that’ he’s talking about.
‘I was angry with you.’
‘For what?’
‘I think you know.’
‘No.’ He shakes his head lightly. ‘I really don’t.’
‘You were one more person to add to a long list.’
‘Of what?’
‘People who aren’t who they appear to be.’
He puts a hand to his jaw, his thumb pressed into his cheek as he looks at her thoughtfully. ‘Is it something I said or … or did?’
Jenna rubs at her arms, suddenly cold. She can’t break her promise to Kate.
‘Are you cold? I could get you a blanket.’
‘No,’ she lies.
‘You’re shivering. Let me get you one.’
