‘I meant you need to put some clothes on.’

His smile widens. ‘Spoilsport.’

‘Well?’ Damian asks as they reach the gate that leads to the wasteland and the cliff path.

He listens, frowning as Jenna describes the conversation she overheard and the sharp sting of a slap. When she reaches the part about Kate asking Tom to say sorry he shakes his head in disgust.

‘That’s fucked up.’

‘I know. But she doesn’t see it that way. She made excuses for him: he’s been under a lot of pressure, she pushed him too hard, etc., etc.’

‘We’re all under pressure. But we don’t go slapping the shit out of people. I should take his head off.’

‘Yeah, because the way to combat violence is with more violence.’

‘I was joking.’

‘Well I’m not. Kate said that Tom will be tearing himself apart about what happened. She’s worried that if it gets out he’ll do something stupid.’

‘That’s emotional blackmail.’

‘But what if he did? What if he actually killed himself?’

‘Jesus.’ Damian zips up the hoody he grabbed from his room and pulls the hood over his head. ‘I need a drink.’

‘I’ve already had one. It didn’t help.’

‘Story of my life. To think I paid to come here when I could have gone to rehab.’

‘Why didn’t you?’

‘Rehab was in Hertfordshire. SoulShrink was in Gozo. It was a no brainer. And I wouldn’t have met you if I’d gone to rehab, would I?’ He grins stupidly and raises his eyebrows suggestively. ‘I’m guessing you’ve gone off Tom now you know he’s handy with his fists?’

‘I was never into him.’

‘I’m no body language expert but I’d say you are approximately three Bacardi Breezers away from a shag. Were.’ He corrects himself.

Something inside Jenna twists. ‘You’re totally off the mark.’

‘If you say so. Anyway …’ Damian looks back towards the hotel complex. ‘What do you reckon? Get the rest of the group together, tell them what happened?’

‘Yeah … fuck … no.’ She tries to get the image of Kate’s pleading face out of her mind but it’s lodged there, along with the quote about judgement. ‘No. We keep an eye on him. And if there’s even the vaguest whisper of him touching one of the other women we’ll shout what he did from the rooftops.’

‘Do you know how dodgy that sounds? Let’s wait until he beats someone else up before we speak up?’

‘He didn’t beat her up. It was more of a slap.’

He stares at her, incredulous, his mouth open. ‘Did you seriously just say that? Fucking hell, Jenna. He’s really got you under his spell. This is bullshit.’
