Okay, so they weren’t having sex very often, he rarely gave her compliments and it had been a long time since they’d looked lovingly into each other’s eyes, but didn’t that happen in all relationships? The first time she realised something was amiss was when Tom took Jenna for an ocean swim. She’d watched from the shadow of the hotel as Jenna had hit out at her husband then collapsed into his arms. There was something so tender about the way he stroked Jenna’s hair that set off alarm bells in Kate’s head, something so intimate about the shape of their bodies as they clung to each other that made her feel sick. Later, when Jenna came to her, telling her she’d heard the slap, Kate had lied about it. She wanted to turn Jenna against Tom and make herself the victim, that way she’d get Jenna onside.
For a while, Kate breathed easily as Jenna actively avoided Tom – she could barely bring herself to look at him at meal times – but when she refused to go to her sessions, Kate had to step in and tell her to go. She didn’t want Tom to become suspicious.
After Jenna was hit by a rock, Kate checked the recording. It was the first time she’d caught Tom out in a lie. He’d told her Jenna was hit by a rock after their session but she’d clearly seen them break off from a hug to rush outside. A hug. He wasn’t supposed to touch the clients in any way, shape or form.
The next video she watched broke her. It wasn’t so much the sex, although that made her want to put her fist through the screen, it was the tenderness afterwards, the soft caresses, the radiant expressions and the lingering looks. Tom had looked at Kate that way once, stroking her cheeks, kissing her lips and gazing into her eyes like he was disappearing inside her. Tom was in love with Jenna. Looking at them, naked and intertwined, hurt so much Kate wanted to claw her eyes from her face. The pain was like nothing she’d ever felt before. It fizzed like poison under her skin, burning through her. She felt rejected, used and abandoned; betrayed, humiliated and defiled. She wanted to drink, to fuck, to get high – she would have done anything to block out the pain. She lifted the laptop above her head. She would smash it to pieces on the hotel room tiles then she’d go after Tom. She’d fly at him, claw his skin from his muscles, rip his hair from his head and tear his heart from his chest. She’d destroy him the same way he’d destroyed her. She’d tweet about his infidelity, put out a press release and rip his reputation to shreds.
