Of course it does. Every conversation Jenna overheard before the sweat lodge ceremony was about the new names people were going to give themselves and the majority were either mythical or some kind of synonym for birth, positivity or starting again. But there’s something unnerving about the way Erica is looking at her. There’s a nervous energy radiating off her that makes Jenna feel uncomfortable. ‘What is it?’ she asks her. ‘What’s happened?’
‘Why do you insist on hurting people?’
‘Sorry?’
Erica’s eyes thin. ‘Why can’t you leave Tom alone?’
‘I don’t …’ Jenna shakes her head lightly. ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.’
But she does, and she feels sick, even as the words leave her mouth. Erica’s found out what’s going on between her and Tom. She must have overheard the conversation Jenna had with Damian behind the marquee. How many people has she told? Does everyone know?
Erica takes a step closer. ‘You’ve really hurt me, Jenna. You’re not the friend I thought you were. I was so quiet yesterday and you didn’t once ask how I was.’
Jenna thinks back to the day before. She slept through breakfast, read for a few hours in the hotel lounge, grabbed some lunch and then went back to their chalet to grab her things for the spa. Erica was sitting on her bed looking at her phone; they exchanged pleasantries and then Jenna headed out again. That’s when she ran into Tom and they had a brief chat. She used the spa for an hour or so and then went back to the chalet. Erica was still on her bed, lying on her side, facing away. Jenna had assumed she was asleep and left her alone.
‘I’m sorry,’ she says. ‘This is about dinner isn’t it? I didn’t wake you up but I—’ Erica holds up a hand, shushing her.
‘I heard you, you and Tom, planning your escape.’
‘Erica—’
‘When you didn’t invite me to the spa I thought I’d go anyway. I was standing in the porch and I overheard your whole conversation.’ She stares at Jenna, her eyes dark and haunted beneath the hood of the dressing gown. ‘That’s why I was so upset this morning, Jenna. Because I stayed awake all night, unable to sleep while you didn’t stir once. You have no conscience, no moral compass and—’
‘Woah! Enough.’ Jenna raises both hands. Erica’s reaction is completely over the top. She’s acting as though she’s Tom’s wife, not Kate. Has she got a crush on him? Is that what it’s about? ‘Stop. Just stop. I’m sorry you overheard that conversation and that it upset you but things have—’
‘I tried to warn you.’
She narrows her eyes. ‘About what?’
‘In fact, I gave you multiple warnings.’
