All she knows for sure is that Jenna’s suitcase, her purse – containing all of her credit cards, her passport, her clothes and her mobile phone – were found in her hotel room. They were couriered to Geraldine and Henry’s house after the British police had examined them. There was nothing unusual or worrying on Jenna’s mobile and, other than some nail varnish on some of her clothes, no sign anything untoward had happened. Even if Jenna had staged her own death she wouldn’t have got very far without money, a phone and a passport. If she is hiding out in Renata’s parents’ house nearby, how did she get back from Malta without her passport? And what was so terrifying that she decided to fake her own death? The only thing Fran can come up with is that she was smuggled onto a ship to escape some kind of Maltese or Gozoian criminal gang, but that’s so ridiculously OTT she can’t countenance it.
Did Renata help Jenna get out of Gozo undetected? She heard from Caroline that the girl’s parents are rich. Maybe they’re friends with senior officials in the British Embassy, or perhaps they know someone with a yacht? Fran isn’t au fait with customs checks at British marinas but she supposes there’s a chance someone could be smuggled back into the UK.
She turns on her headlights as she joins the A497. There’s one car between her and Renata’s Range Rover and she drives in silence, watching out for road signs that might give her a clue as to where they’re heading. She passes a holiday park then, ten minutes or so later, spots a sign for Abererch Sands Holiday Centre. They’re heading west, along the A499. Is Jenna hiding out in a house by the sea?
Fran checks her watch as the road bends into Abersoch. She’s been following Renata for nearly forty minutes. Could Jenna have been so close the whole time? The car in front turns off and now it’s just Fran trailing Renata and Tom as they weave their way through the narrow streets of the small Welsh village. It’s stuffy and airless in the car so Fran winds down the window. She smells the sea air before she hears it – the low drone of the waves, beating against the beach.
As Renata’s Range Rover slows, so does Fran. Then, as Renata indicates left into what looks like a track or possibly a private driveway, Fran deliberates. If she follows her and it is the entrance to her parents’ house, she’ll blow her cover. If she keeps driving and goes back on foot she might lose them. The track is too narrow to allow two cars to pass each other and if it doesn’t lead to Renata’s parents’ house it can’t be much further away.
