As the screen flashes to life Fran checks her watch. She’s got five minutes, ten minutes tops to get the SSD card into the laptop and delete her therapy session from the recording. When that’s done she’ll give the card to Caroline and she can do what she wants with it (with the proviso she doesn’t share any of the other guests’ private conversations, even the irritating ones like Peter).
There’s no sign of an adaptor to plug the SSD card into so Fran yanks open the drawers. It’s not there.
Breathe, Fran tells herself, as she casts an eye over the dressing table for a second time. She lifts papers, and the laptop, then she checks the drawers again. And there it is, lying in the corner, a small, black adaptor. She snatches it up, slots the card into place, then pushes it into the side of the laptop. As a notification pops up on screen, asking her what she’d like to do with the drive, the fire alarm stops. The walls of the house are thin and she can hear shouts and bangs from downstairs. If Kate’s got any sense she’ll turn off the electricity, put out the fire, chuck the toaster outside and return to her room.
There are two folders on the card. One labelled Wales and the date of the retreat, the other labelled Gozo. Fran catches her breath. If Kate has been recording all the therapy sessions then there’s got to be one of Jenna. Frantically she scans the folder names:
Alan
Alison
Bessie
Damian
Erica
Jenna!
There are three files in Jenna’s folder. Fran double clicks on the first and inhales sharply as her sister walks into frame. Jenna’s in a bedroom just like the one Fran stayed in when she went to Ta’ Cenc in Gozo, but it’s bigger. There’s a double bed with two chairs in front of it, separated by a table. Tom’s in one of the chairs. He stands as Jenna walks into the room and holds out a hand. Jenna doesn’t shake it. Instead she slumps into the empty chair and she … Fran squints, despite her glasses, it’s so hard to make out the expression on her sister’s face because she’s so far away from the camera … Is Jenna glaring at Tom? The urge to keep watching is almost more than she can bear but there are two more files with her sister’s name on and she hasn’t got much time. Kate could come back in at any moment; the smell of burnt toast is already starting to fade.
