He got to his feet, water clinging to his legs. ‘I guess I’ll see you then.’
‘I guess you will.’
Tom wasn’t sitting in his armchair when she walked into his chalet. Nor was he strolling out from a back room with two mugs of tea. He was perched on the edge of the bed in jeans and a grey T-shirt, cleanly shaven, hair wet from the shower, his bare feet on the floor. He stood as Jenna entered the room, gave her the briefest of smiles then, without saying a word, pulled the wooden shutters closed and locked the glass doors. When he did, finally, walk towards her, Jenna’s heart was beating so powerfully she could feel it in her throat. He was as nervous as she was. She could see it in the rapid rise and fall of his chest, the dark swell of his pupils and the thumb of his right hand, rubbing circles into the denim of his jeans.
‘Kiss me,’ she said.
Now, as they lie together under the blankets, warm and naked, their limbs entwined, Tom strokes Jenna’s hair as she rests her head on his chest, her eyes closed.
‘I’m going to give up SoulShrink,’ Tom says quietly. ‘I’m going to walk away.’
‘What?’ Jenna shifts up onto her elbow so she can see his face. ‘I thought you said—’
‘I’ve been thinking about it for a long time and I’ve realised that I can’t keep living like this. This will be the last retreat I ever do and then’ – he shakes his head – ‘then I reclaim myself. I just want to be Tom again. I never wanted to be famous, respected or rich. I didn’t want a monetised YouTube channel or a huge Twitter following or a book deal or a tour or any of the other stuff that Kate’s been pushing for. Those are her dreams, not mine. But I tried, I really tried, because I felt like I owed her. And I wanted to make her happy. But I’m not happy. I’ve not been happy for a very long time.’
‘I think that’s the right decision,’ Jenna says as she pulls the blanket up over her shoulder. ‘I could see you were troubled, the other day on the cliffs. I didn’t know why though. But it makes sense now. You’ve got to put your own happiness first.’
‘Yeah.’ He smiles but the wistfulness doesn’t leave his eyes.
‘What?’ she asks. ‘What is it?’
‘If I gave all this up … started a new life … Would you … could you, imagine being part of it?’
