As Jenna steps onto the patio, her gaze flits towards the wall that separates Tom’s chalet from the waste ground beyond. The space in the stones, where an eye peered in at her, is no longer there. It’s been filled so seamlessly she can’t work out where it was. She touches a hand to her forehead, feeling the rough texture of the skin closure strips under her fingertips. The doctor told her the wound wasn’t deep enough to require stitches but she might develop a scar. Tom wasn’t with her when the doctor arrived. He fled after she confronted him about Kate, saying he was late for his next session. Had she insulted him by insinuating that there was more to his relationship with Kate than a professional relationship? Had she come across as unstable and jealous? It would explain why he’d avoided her for the rest of the day, seating himself at the far end of the dinner table and disappearing before dessert. Conversely, Kate couldn’t have been more attentive. She took the seat next to Jenna and fussed and faffed throughout the meal, grabbing up the water carafe the minute Jenna’s glass emptied, insisting the waiter gave her her meal first, and generally gnawing her ear off with question after question. Was she feeling okay? Had she napped? Was there any dizziness? On and on she went until, finally, Jenna had had enough and excused herself to the toilet.
Kate was waiting when she came out.
‘I’ll refund the cost of the retreat,’ Kate said, grasping one of Jenna’s hands with both of hers, ‘as recompense for what happened. I wouldn’t want your SoulShrink experience to be tarnished by the actions of a couple of bored children.’
Her deep red nails dug into Jenna’s skin. ‘I want you to be able to sing our praises, not …’ she tailed off.
Jenna almost laughed at how transparent Kate was being. She wasn’t concerned about her wellbeing, she was worried about SoulShrink’s reputation.
‘Thank you,’ she said. ‘That would be very helpful.’
And it would. She hadn’t paid her rent for that month in order to afford the retreat.
‘I can rely on your discretion, can’t I?’ Kate said. ‘We wouldn’t want the other guests running to me for refunds if they stub their toes on a door.’
‘Of course.’ Jenna smiled sweetly. ‘Your secret is safe with me.’
That one, anyway.
Now, as she walks through the doorway into Tom’s chalet, unease flutters like moths in her stomach. Is Tom going to bring up what happened when they were in the same room yesterday? Should she?
‘Jenna!’ He gets up from his armchair as she walks into the room. ‘How are you?’
