Fran stops walking and rubs her hands over her face. If she discovers who murdered her sister, will it assuage her regret? Is that why she’s teamed up with Caroline to discover what Kate and Tom are hiding? Normally she’d have rung the police. If a crime has been committed then it should be reported. But Jenna’s death has already been investigated – by the Gozoian and the British police – and been ruled a suicide. Yet Caroline seems so certain it was murder: a source told her about blood on the rocks, destroyed evidence, missing statements. She’s done so much work already, why not leave her to it?
Because it’s about justice, Fran tells herself as she sets off again, the house in her sights. Someone took her sister’s life. And she’s going to find out who.
It’s unusually quiet in the living room. Peter has taken the comfiest chair in the corner of the room, his book held at arm’s length. He scowls as he turns the page. Fran raises her eyebrows. Who scowls when they read? The man’s probably one of those terrible Amazon reviewers who gives one star to every book they buy. ‘I purchased How Not to Be an Arsehole with the greatest of expectations. However, the missing full stop on page five ruined the reading experience for me. If I could give this book no stars I would.’
She turns away.
Priyanka, bent over a low table with a pen in her hand, catches her eye and smiles. ‘Everything okay, Geraldine?’
‘It’s very quiet in here.’
‘I think everyone’s a bit worn out from the white-water rafting this morning.’ Her smile fades. ‘Are you and Joy fully recovered? I was horrified when your dinghy overturned, especially when you both took ages to come back up to the surface.’
‘I’m fine.’ Fran smiles tightly as a pang of guilt plucks at her heart. Priyanka is the woman she’s pretending to be – knocked for six by her husband’s death and as lonely as they come. She never stops smiling though and she’s always the first to offer a hand if anyone needs help. But Fran’s seen the cheery facade slip, when everyone else is chatting, and the most terrible sadness fills Priyanka’s eyes. If Fran wasn’t on a mission to find out who killed Jenna and why, she’d take the time to get to know Priyanka. She seems like she needs a friend. All the more reason for Fran to begin her interrogation of the Gozo three as soon as possible.
‘I don’t suppose you know where Renata is?’ she asks.
‘Oh yes,’ Priyanka says brightly. ‘Last time I saw her she was in the hot tub with Phoenix and Damian.’ She smiles naughtily. ‘Lucky girl.’
