He ended the call and they looked at one another. It was an odd moment for any caseto feel such a sense of possible momentum but having to wait for someone else to deliver the information needed to get moving again.
You think the psychiatrist Staunton was seeing will be any help? Jack asked.
Doubtful. Because hes already passed, I doubt theyre going to see fit to breach doctor-patient confidentiality. If he was still alive and we had it on good authority that he planned to hurt someone…maybe.
Also, Rachel said, even though Lisa has been ruled out as the operator that spoke to Dustin Adams on the hotline, I cant quite let that go. I mean, all four of our victims called the same hotline. I mean, even if the operators and Shelby werent under scrutiny, I think the case could be argued that they may not be very good at what they do.
I thought the same thing, Jack said. But we both heard the recordings of those calls. If Lisas skillset is any indicator, Id say theyre all pretty good at their jobs. And that then leads me to think the hotline has nothing to do with it. I do have to acknowledge the coincidental nature of it all, though.
While they waited for Jacks contact to call back, they looked over the phone records one more time, looking for any other similarities. But all they found was that three of the four had eaten pizza from the same chain over the past three weeks, though from different locations.
It seemed like it took forever for Jacks call to come, but Rachels own phone told her it had only been nine minutes. When Jack answered the call, he placed it on speaker mode so Rachel could hear as well.
I like the speed you guys have going over there, Jack joked. You got a name and location for me?
Ive got an address, a deep yet chipper male voice responded. Its a cell phone, so if the user was moving, wed see that. But this user is stationary and, from what I can see, is actively using the phone right now. I didnt get a name, like I said, which makes me think its either an illegal burner-type phone or one of those pay-as-you-go deals.
Got an address?
The man on the other line did have an address, and he recited it slowly. Rachel jotted down on the same sheet of the report shed penned his message concerning Lisas innocence. Jack gave a quick Thank you and ended the call.
Rachel got to her feet, slapping at the address on the paper. Okay. Looks like were heading back to Brooklyn.
Figures, Jack said. Id really love to wrap this thing and not have to cross another damned bridge.
Rachel knew he meant it as a joke, but there was nothing at all funny about the uneasy tone in his voice.
