Its moving very slowly about two miles away from where were currently standing…on the Wards Island Bridge.
At the word bridge, they both took off at a steady run through the door Rachel had kicked in less than twenty minutes ago.
CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT
With no bubble lights for their rental, Rachel had to rely on the blaring of her horn at intersections and her hazard lights. Meanwhile, Jack called on Branson to let the NYPD know where they were, where they were headed, and not to have any units try to pull them over for speeding or reckless driving. All the while, Rachels phone was giving her directions to the bridge via GPS. It all seemed to happen quickly, not just the driving but Jacks conversation with Branson and the feeling that this case was either going to end or become a catastrophic nightmare in the next half an hour or so.
As she tore down 99th Street, slamming angrily down on the horn as she came up behind two cabs, Jack looked slightly scared of her driving but remained as professional as possible. As he spoke with Branson, an idea came to Rachel. It was insane but, at the same time, made perfect sense.
How quick can he get a unit there? she asked.
Jack relayed the question and parroted an answer almost immediately. Within about five minutes. Just a little before wed get there.
I know it might add a few minutes, but Im wondering if he can make it so that I have something specific waiting there for me.
Specific like what?
Rachel told him and his eyes grew increasingly wide. Are you sure?
No. But ask anyway.
Jack shook his head in disbelief and relayed his question to Branson. When the call was over ten seconds later, Jack looked to her and nodded. He says the equipment will be there, and hell bring it himself. He might be several minutes behind us, though. About that equipment you wanted…Im not sure if
Me neither. But itll work.
It seems risky.
I know. What else did Branson say? she asked, trying to swerve the topic.
He says that the Wards Island Bridge is a pedestrian bridge only. He guesses it might be about three hundred to three hundred and fifty feet tall at its highest point. Theres two available units closer to the bridge than we are right now, but he said hes going to give it to us. The other units will fall in in case we need backup.
Rachel only nodded, afraid to take her eyes off of the traffic. It seemed that drivers of most of the cars they came upon did their best to get out of the way but even then, it was a major headache to get around them all.
