Rachel noted the name and tucked it away in her head. She looked back at the doorway to Pam and saw the signs of a concerned mother. She wanted them out, but was being too polite to say so. As far as they were concerned, Josephs death was a suicide and their being here was only drawing things out. Rachel agreed with this sentiment and now that they had a name to go on, she thought theyd gotten more than enough.

Well leave you alone now, Rachel said. Thanks for your time and truly…were sorry for your loss.

They headed back outside and Rachel found herself having to work a little more than usual to shrug off the feeling of despair and sadness shed felt in the house. As she made her way to the car, she saw Jack tapping at his phone.

Got that email from Branson, he said. What did Ellen say the name of the support group leader is?

Becky Height.

Even before Jack had a chance to confirm it, Rachel knew what he was about to say. He held up his phone and nodded. She just happens to be the leader of the support group Edwin Newkirk belonged to, also.

Got a number?

And an address, he said as he got into the car, already plugging Becky Heights address into his phone.

CHAPTER EIGHT

One of the things Jack Rivers had been noticing more and more over the past five years or so was that the number of people working from home was increasing by staggering numbers with the passing of each year. There was no real reason for a fifty-year-old woman to be at home just before one oclock on a Friday afternoon, but Becky Height was. She seemed supremely irritated when she came to the door, but she was home all the same.

Can I ask what this is in reference to? she asked sternly after seeing the badges of the two FBI agents standing outside the door of her Manhattan apartment.

Were looking into the deaths of two men from your depression support group, Rachel said. Joseph Staunton and Edwin Newkirk.

Oh, I see, Becky said, the irritation dwindling the smallest bit. Come in, come in, but wait in the kitchen, please. Im finishing up a call. She pointed to the very thin headset on her headso small and nondescript that Jack hadnt noticed it right away. I have it on mute, and Ill be done at one oclock.

It felt a bit odd to take orders from a woman theyd just met, especially a woman they had come to question, but one oclock was only five minutes away and he didnt see the point in arguing. Rachel seemed fine with it as well, entering through the opened door with a quick nod and a smile.
