Jack nodded and softly said, Yeah, I noticed that, too.

So while hes certainly a real piece of work, hes not our killer.

Well need to run those checks on his computer and phone records, but yeah…thats the sense Im coming to, too.

So back to nothing more than phone records, Rachel said, exasperated.

Yeah, but at least thats something.

Rachel simply could not find that optimism. She gathered up the phone records Branson had supplied and started thumbing through them again, though she already felt that she was wasting her time. And behind that lack of motivation, she could still feel that sense of foreboding, wondering how shed react if someone came forward and tried to blackmail her.

Someone like Alex Lynch, who had already come forward and threatened to play such a hand.

CHAPTER TWENTY

Not content to simply sit around the station, Rachel and Jack headed back out. Four bodies in four nights was a pretty good indicator that a fifth night would end in a fifth body. With no clear leads and all potential suspects ending in dead ends, they decided to head back out to High Bridge over the Harlem River, mainly because it was the most recent crime scene.

Because it was a pedestrian bridge only, it had been closed down. Crime scene tape and heavy sawhorses were stacked at either end. Determined pedestrians (or just those curious about what might have happened on the bridge overnight) could still easily get on if they wanted, but when Rachel stepped out onto it, there were no such brave souls there.

As she walked out onto the bridge, she looked back behind her, down to the same bank the body of Dustin Adams had been pulled out of the night before. Jack was down there, taking pictures and dropping down to his haunches to get a better look at certain areas. She knew that he was once again hung up on the idea that there was something wrong with her. It went beyond his skills of being a good agent and more along the lines of how well he knew her. He was trying quite hard to mind his own business and she respected and thanked him for it, but she could clearly see that it was hard for him.
