You dont think he might have just gotten pissed that someone turned down his offer to help themfor a fee? I mean, based on what he was trying to do to drum up business, hes not exactly a moral man.
Maybe. But then, why kill off clients? If hes calling these non-clients for new business, what sense does it make that he would kill current clients?
Harsh understanding came across Jacks face. Yeah, that is a good point.
They came to Bransons desk, near the back of the bullpen, and saw that he was on his desks landline phone. He beckoned them over just as he was setting the receiver back down into its cradle.
Did you get anything out of him? Branson asked.
A bit, Rachel said. But I dont know that its going to turn out to be anything worth a damn.
If it helps, that was the magistrate I was on the phone with. He says the warrant will be good to go in about fifteen minutes. So as far as Im concerned, that means we can start searching. What do you need from me?
As much manpower as you can lend to look his business and apartment over. Were also going to need someone from tech to get into his phone and laptop as quickly as possible.
Anything else?
Yeah, Jack said. Get someone to walk him to a phone. He keeps asking to speak to his lawyer. And with what hes already told us, I really feel like hes going to need it.
CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR
The gorgeous receptionist back at Deringers office somehow managed to still look immaculate despite her angry stare. The stare was mostly directed at Rachel, even though there were two NYPD officers and Jack accompanying her. One of the officers was straight from the technical department. While Rachel, Jack, and the officer looked through some of the papers on and in Deringers desk, the technician was on the phone with someone else, cooperatively walking through the process of tapping into the laptop of Deringers desk. Rachel also got the impression that the person on the other end of the line was at the station, doing the very same thing to the cell phone theyd taken from Deringers possession when hed been processed.
Feeling confident that any clues or leads would come from a digital means, Rachel felt almost useless in looking through the scattered papers. More than that, she also knew that if they werent careful with things like personal records and client histories in a therapists office, it could very well come back to bite them in the ass.
