Not everything. I just told her that her great-grandmother was sick and that it seems to be serious. She doesnt know the eventual outcome yet. He sighed and said, I can tell youre pissed. Do we just need to call it a night and not bother talking?
She hated that the answer came so easily to her but it was out of her mouth before she could answer. Yes, Peter. Yes, I think thats a good idea. Just try not to tell her anything else she doesnt need to know just yet.
I know that, Rachel!
She took a deep breath and tried to focus herself. Through the windshield, she saw Jack coming out of the coffee shop with their drinks. Good night, Peter.
Good night.
She ended the call instantly and tossed the phone into the console. She wanted to be furious with him and she supposed that was part of why she felt so betrayed. But she also knew that part of the reason she was so furious was because she once again felt herself balancing along that very thin line of Grandma Tates situation mirroring her own. Dealing with Grandma Tates diagnosis and having that conversation with Paige was going to be far too close to revealing her own truth. And the pain in Paiges eyes over the idea of her great-grandmother being very sick was only a precursor to what might lurk there if she knew her own mother was very sick, too.
Seeing that she was off of the phone, Jack got back into the car. He handed Rachel her tea and in a passive, casual manner, asked, Everything good at home?
Yeah, she said, though she could taste resentment lurking in the anger shed not yet been able to voice. Everything is great.
She then started the car and took off in the direction of the next bridge on their list.
CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Dustin Adams parked in the corner lot of High Bridge Park and looked to the right. There, the High Bridge, the oldest bridge in New York City, loomed over the Harlem River. It was one of those sights Dustin had always heard about but never took the time to visit. Hed been living in New York City for almost eight years now and had somehow managed to never catch that bug most newcomers got. Hed never cared to visit the Statue of Liberty, or to stand dumbstruck at Christmas in Rockefeller Center. So hed never cared much to come out to this old bridge that had been closed for a good amount of time, only to be reopened for bicyclists and pedestrians in the name of historic significance.
Now that he looked at it though, he had to admit that it did look sort of cool. The curvature and steel arches looked almost like something out of Gotham City from the Batman movies and comics. This only added to the tension and unease Dustin felt as he looked at it, though.
