Rachel scanned the pages as she and Jack made their way into the conference room. She had not even sat down before she found the two things she was specifically looking for. First and foremost, there was yet another call from a private number. In Dustins case, it had come the day before his death. What she did not see at first was a call to Better Days Prevention Hotline in the days leading up to it. Yet as she looked through the records, she did see the number pop up from three weeks in the past.
Okay, so we divide and conquer, Jack said. You call Shelby at Better Days and see if Lisa took this call three weeks ago when Dustin called. If she did…I dont even know. I know shes probably free of anything related to this case, but thats just too much to look beyond.
And you?
Ill get on the phone with the bureau to light a fire under someone to get me the information on these private numbers. If I have to, Ill shake it up the tree straight to Director Anderson.
With a game plan in mind, they went to separate sides of the room. As she pulled up the number Shelby had given her while visiting Better Days, Rachel found that she truly hoped it would turn out that Lisa had not spoken with Dustin Adams. She was all but certain Lisa had nothing to do with the crimesthat she was simply the recipient of an insane amount of bad luck and coincidence. To put her through yet another session of what shed experienced this morning almost seemed like torture.
The phone rang and Shelby answered right away. Better Days Prevention Hotline, this is Shelby.
Shelby, its Agent Gift again. I hate to say it, but theres been another one. A fourth victim that appears to have been a jumper but…well, theres enough at the scene to make us think it may have been foul play. Even as she said this, she could see that streak of fresh blood on the side of the bridge.
My God. Agent Gift…this is unprecedented. Are you now certain theyre murders?
Im becoming more and more certain of it, yes. But theres another thing. Weve just received phone records for the fourth victim. Its a man by the name of Dustin Adams. He called your hotline three weeks ago. I know its a very long shot, but we have to be sure…
You want to know if he spoke with Lisa.
Yes. Could you find that out, please?
Of course, Shelby said. Her voice was thin and sad, as if she were deathly afraid of what they were on the cusp of discovering. I just need the phone number and the time he called in.
