Becky didnt even bother leading them to the kitchen. She simply walked out of the foyer and down a hall, where she then pointed them in the direction of the kitchen while she disappeared into a large room, shutting the door behind her. Jack and Rachel walked into the small but very quaint kitchen. It was a basic L shape with a small island in the center of the room. Afternoon sunlight came in through a window over the sink.

You ever been bossed around by someone youre looking to question? Jack asked.

Rachel seemed to be studying the marble counters when she gave a half-hearted chuckle. No. But Im assuming she works from home as a therapist or counselor.

How do you know that?

I dont. Im assuming. If she leads support groups for people with depression and works from home in a job that requires her to speak with people on the phone, Id guess its for some sort of telehealth.

Jack nodded, impressed with how quickly she was able to make those connections. Shed always been very good at it. But as she continued to look passively around the kitchen, Jack couldnt help but notice that something still seemed a little disconnected about Rachel. While he certainly felt for her in regards to the news about her grandmother, he still couldnt help but feel that something deeper was going on. Hed felt it several weeks ago when they had worked a case together; when hed called it out or tried to get her to talk about it, shed gotten defensive and uncharacteristically hostile. He thought he still sensed traces of it now but he had no idea how to broach it again without pushing her further away.

As he wrestled with this, Becky Height finally came walking into the kitchen. She looked hurried and a little embarrassed as she went to the fridge and got out a bottle of spring water. Either of you want one? she asked.

They both declined as Becky unscrewed the top of her water. She sighed and looked to both of them as she took her first sip. When it was down, she said: So, the FBI is looking into Josephs and Edwins suicides?

Thats right, Jack said. Theres just enough evidence behind Edwin Newkirks jump to suggest it may not have been an intentional act.

And what about Joseph?

We dont know just yet, Rachel said. But there have been three in just as many days and if one of them seems to suggest some sort of foul play, they all need to be researched and investigated as such, just to make sure.

There was another man, Jack said. The second of what is now three apparent suicides. The second was a man named Nicholas Harding. Does that name ring a bell? Has he been in any of your groups?
