“Fuck, this feels good,” he moaned, and closed his eyes. He tipped his face to the sun and spread his arms out to the side.
I forced myself to remember how to swallow. With his arms out, muscles in his biceps flexed. Water rolled and bubbled over his chest, a dark smattering of hair that wasn’t too much, but definitely not bare. He inhaled deeply, and as he blew out a breath, his corded throat made my mouth water.
Next to me, Tracy patted my thigh beneath the water and when I turned to her, she winked. “See?”
Good god. Yeah I saw. I saw her sexy as hell son sitting next to me, totally oblivious to the fact I was checking him out—but his mom didn’t miss a beat.
I stared at the water, my cheeks warming that had nothing to do with the water or the sun and felt both her and Heather’s eyes on me. And I was pretty sure they were feeling pretty damn pleased with themselves.

Heather squeezed my hand as we followed Chuck and Tracy down the arena’s hallways to the locker room area. There was a family waiting room around the corner where we could hang out while the guys showered. The family room, I’d learned the other night, also had a small, staffed daycare area so wives of players with kids could drop them off and enjoy watching their guy play in peace.
Lizzie and Paige had both taken their babies there the other night for the first period so they could watch a little bit of the game without distraction.
“And the game was incredible.”
The game was equally confusing as it’d always been for me. Moved so fast, and changed direction so often, I wasn’t exactly sure how they could have named positions when it all looked like madness and mayhem. Yeah, I was learning a few of the rules, and every time Kane had the puck, my hands curled into fists with excitement.
But incredible? It’d be a while, a long while, before I understood the game enough to call it that.
Chaotic was the only word I could use to describe it.
“It was good they won.”
Beating Seattle by three, however, I guess was a good thing.
“You crack me up.” Heather bumped her shoulder into mine playfully. “And we haven’t had a lot of time alone the last couple days to really talk. You doing okay?”
She dropped her hand and grabbed mine, giving it a squeeze.
“I’m still in denial mode until I can talk with Kane’s lawyer tomorrow and give Glen another call.”
“Good. Then I hope you two can finally enjoy a night alone.”
“You’re not staying there again?”
“No. Mom and Dad fly out early tomorrow too so I’m riding with them. I’m staying at the hotel with them by the airport.”
My bottom lip pushed out into a pout. Ever since Heather started working out at Martha’s Vineyard, I hardly saw her. These last few days with her, despite the reason, had been a surprise blessing I needed after the last couple of months.
