“Gin?” she asked.
“Yeah, but no limes or tonic, if that’s what you’re looking for.” I made a quick mental note to get some for her, though.
“Oh. Well then maybe a white wine?”
I opened the door and pulled out the four I had. “Sweet or dry?”
“Sauvignon Blanc if you have it.”
It struck me then that she wasn’t ending every sentence with please, or I can do it, or you don’t have to.
Maybe what I’d told her sunk in earlier.
Maybe she was getting more comfortable. After only a few hours, I liked the idea of that. Emmersyn padding around my home, comfortable in the space.
I shook my head as I pulled out a bottle and grabbed the wine opener. She was my sister’s friend. Not to mention she had her own shit to deal with.
She was a guest.
Not a new roommate… or anything else, despite my attraction to her.
“So, you found out he’d been cheating for a while,” I said while I opened the wine to get her back to talking.
“Yeah. I made a fake account. Downloaded a picture of a woman—”
“You catfished him?” I didn’t think she’d have it in her. That’d be something Heather would do for sure, but my chest swelled with pride all the same. Good for her, for not just catching him and walking away.
I handed her the wine and after she took a sip, she nodded. Pointed to her cheek. “Didn’t go so well.”
“What happened?”
I braced my hands on the counter to stop her from seeing my fisted hands. Might need to leave for practice an hour early to give me time with a punching bag at this rate.
She slid onto a barstool and took another sip. I grabbed a glass and filled it with water. “I made sure we matched. Waited for him to make the first move. It took him three days to ask me out.”
My brows rose on my forehead. Clear signs of a guy just wanting a hook-up.
“And you went.”
“Yeah.” She gulped her wine and then set it down, fingering the base of the glass with fingers that were long, thin, and manicured a perfectly pale pink. “Want to know the funny thing?”
“There’s something funny about any of this?”
Her lips twitched. “I showed up, told him who I was—the name of the girl on the app—and I tossed my engagement ring onto the table. Told him we were done.”
Damn. The balls on this chick.
I crossed my arms over my chest. Things were starting to make sense. No guy, even the ones who cheat would want to be caught so blatantly or publicly. “So you ended it and he got pissed.”
“No. I don’t think he would have gotten pissed about that. Not really. I think he was more embarrassed.”
“Embarrassed?”
“Yeah. I embarrassed him in public. The second I threw the ring down and showed him the picture on the dating app, the waiter came up. Heard everything. I think that’s what made him mad.”
