If Heather loved Emmersyn this much to help her out and knew I would, Emmersyn was one of those good women.
“Yeah. Maybe.”
“So you confronted him and he lost his shit?” Or fuck, could I shove my foot into my mouth anymore?
Another rub of that cut. “He’s never done that before. Ever. Never could have imagined he had that in him.”
I turned a corner on the cart and headed toward my garage.
“That’s why Heather is so mad. She’s pissed he fooled us, you know? Because we thought he was so nice. So sweet. He always took such good care of me, helped with the house, made me feel special. I thought I was the luckiest girl in the world.”
I pulled up to the garage and waited for the door to open. The third one of Alix’s sports cars, this one bright orange and obnoxious as fuck, was sitting in his driveway. Guess he finally came home from last night’s party.
“I’m sorry, for all of it.”
“Yeah. Me too. But to answer your question, I didn’t confront him about the cheating that night.”
“You didn’t?”
“No.” There was a tiny smile before she wiped it away.
I parked the cart, and we stepped out. Once we were inside, she continued. “I needed to make sure, you know? I wanted to be able to talk to him about it and know, so he couldn’t lie and leave me guessing.”
Not what I would have done, but I didn’t fault her logic. “That was a good idea.”
“At the time, I was wondering if he was getting cold feet about the wedding or something. Having a freak-out or whatever and wanted to double check we were doing the right thing? It sounds stupid, and I’m trying to justify it, I know now, but that’s what I was thinking. Maybe it was harmless flirting.”
I wasn’t sure harmless flirting existed when you were about ready to commit to marriage, but I let it slide. “All right.”
She rolled her eyes. “I know I sound dumb. I had a plan.”
Not dumb. Naive maybe. Or in denial. “So what was your plan?”
“Well, at first, I waited until he’d gone to bed and got into his phone. That’s when I learned he’d had the account for so long. He wasn’t freaking out over a wedding, he was… God… the number of women on there… the pics he sent to them.” She made a face as her chin shook.
Shit. I could handle the crying, but I didn’t know her well enough to comfort her if she needed it.
“You don’t have to keep going.”
Emmersyn ran her fingers through her hair and blinked away the tears. “No. If you don’t mind… but do you have something to drink?”
Now she was speaking my language. “Follow me.”
I led her to the kitchen, where I had two cupboards stocked with every liquor imaginable. Beneath the bar, I pointed to the wine fridge. “Pick your poison.”
