“You almost killed me,” I admitted, a smile on my lips as I pulled back. “You keep getting better at this.”
He laughed, splashed hot water on his face, and shoved his hair back. “Fucking you might be my new favorite hobby.”
I splashed him again and pushed off his lap to the other side of the hot tub. My mouth was dry, but no way was I getting out of there to get something to drink.
Kane rested his head along the back of the hot tub, soaking in the sun and the relaxing heat of the bubbles surrounding us. “You hear anything good from Megan?”
I’d skipped his home game today because Megan’s assistant, Shirley, called me last night to schedule an appointment for an update.
It’d been two long weeks since I first talked to Megan, and we weren’t any closer to getting a hold of Glen Hayes.
“Nothing good. Not really. She’s got a private investigator looking for Hayes now, and no one in the office knows where he went. Since the trust says no one but the trustee can handle it, she’s having a hard time getting someone to take a look at the agreement in the first place. They all know it’s private.”
“But it’s not even theirs to have.”
“Yeah, but she doesn’t want to violate the trust by getting it back behind his back, either. She said it leaves an opening for a countersuit or something. I wish I understood more.”
“Fuck.”
“I know.” Frustration bubbled in me and made my chin tremble with emotion. I bit down so I didn’t cry. I just wanted this over. The only good news to happen in the last two weeks was Lincoln had stopped trying to call. I turned on my old phone occasionally, and there were never new messages or threats from him.
So he was either planning something or had given up, which was unlikely, seeing as how Hayes was nowhere to be found.
“I’ll be in Boston in a week for a game. I could try to make time to go to his office. Or hers? Maybe if one of us shows up in person, it’ll get them moving faster.”
“Maybe.” I shrugged. “It’s not even about the money, fully. I want this over, so I know Lincoln’s out of my life, for good.” He’d stolen enough of it and even in his absence, was still too large of a part.
In the meantime, John Banks finished our post-nuptial agreement. It was everything we’d requested, only assets we brought into our marriage, no trust access for Kane, and I didn’t receive any gains on income or endorsement during our marriage. It was completely fair.
Yet a rock had still settled in my stomach when we went to his office earlier this week to sign the papers. It felt so… temporary. The exact opposite of what I was beginning to learn I wanted this to be.
Kane moved in the hot tub until he was at my side, brushing hair behind my ear and kissing my cheek. “Hey. You have me. We’ll be okay. So this takes longer, you won’t hear me complaining.”
