  39. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I let out a breath and blinked into the darkness of the room, seeing nothing. When I turned around, Puca’s gold eyes glowed at me, looking anything but human. They were currently too big, and the pupils were shaped like a goat’s. I never liked goats. Fuck if I knew if he was one though. Knowing Puca’s true form would be like catching a falling star. Unlikely as fuck. The irritating monster would die before he was honest about anything.

Also, his power levels shifted along with his shape. Nothing was ever simple with the Irish sidhe. Who knew what he was capable of. If I didn’t, doubt anyone else did either.

“Better hurry up. She might actually escape,” Puca taunted with a chuckle.

“Catching her is my job now? I thought you wanted to do that all yourself.”

“I do the spying, I lay the traps, and now I’m supposed to do the catching as well? Why did I team up with you two again?” His glowing eyes shifted back and forth as he watched Lacey ping around the room like a loose bullet ricocheting off bulletproof glass. I sighed and turned around, not in any rush since where was she going to go? The electricity wasn’t on, so the elevator didn’t work. The stairs were essentially nonexistent, hidden in here somewhere because, obviously, it was low-class to have stairs. I grumbled and stomped further into the living room.

The lights came on suddenly, half-blinding me. Splotches of reds, yellows, and blacks dotted my vision as my eyes failed to adjust. I heard the elevator doors open with a ding. Fuck.

“The elevator lost power for a second,” Lorcan said, strolling out while holding a paper bag of takeout. At least it sort of looked that way as my eyes adjusted.

Lacey just happened to be right next to the elevator. She grabbed him by his shirt and pushed him towards the couch. Lorcan went over the back, french fries flying everywhere as his legs went topsy-turvy. The fries rained down on me as I stomped forward. Lacey was cursing in the elevator, her finger mashing the down button frantically.

“Shit. Shit. Shit,” she said as I stomped closer. Her eyes widened as I approached. The doors started to close and she glued her body against the back of the elevator, looking at me like I was Death itself coming to collect. Not entirely wrong.

The doors closed, and the elevator car started moving down. I blinked at the distorted reflection of myself in the metal before I growled and took off toward the master bedroom.

“Get your arses over here. We ain’t fucking losing her.”

“We don’t need her luck!” Lorcan yelled out from the other room, sounding irritated. “Good riddance,” he grumbled.

“I’ll be there in a minute,” Puca yelled lazily.

“This merry group is a shit show,” I growled, ripping the closet doors open and shoving clothes to the side. Another elevator was against the back wall, a metal cage that hadn’t been updated since this building was built in the 1920s. I jumped in and the thing creaked and groaned as it took my weight. It held good enough though and we started the descent as my face twitched. The entire way down it continued to protest much like my companions—bitching and moaning about having to do something.
