- THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING
A frown chiselled away at my face. No, that couldn’t be right. Jarvis had taken my daughter? He wouldn’t dare. He knew what I’d do to him if he ever tried such a thing. And, anyway, why he would he?
‘I thought you said Jarvis had been demoted and wasn’t Eva’s second in command any more?’ said Callie.
‘He isn’t … wasn’t.’
‘Maybe Eva reinstated him once she heard about Stoats’s death and he’s following her orders?’
‘He wouldn’t do that,’ I argued. ‘It doesn’t make sense. Jarvis wouldn’t—’
‘Of course he would,’ Callie interrupted. ‘If it’s true about his demotion, Jarvis has nothing to lose now. Maybe he considered it was time to go freelance – or retire on your money – and your cash would certainly help finance that. And, if no one suspects him, so much the better.’
A chill crept right through me. Was it true? Had Jarvis betrayed me? Is that why I’d been unable to get in touch with him? Jarvis was a strange one. Even after all these years, I still hadn’t quite worked out what made him tick. I mean, he was one of the most ruthless people I’d ever met. He’d reverse over his granny in a tank if he needed to, and yet I’d watched him tear up at a nature film where a fox had been shot by a farmer.
‘Jarvis values honour and loyalty above most everything else. If he’d done this, I would know.’ Who was I trying to convince – Callie or myself?
‘I’m sorry, Tobey, but what’s loyalty and honour when you could have several millions at your disposal for the rest of your life?’ said Callie.
‘There’s something wrong here,’ I said, perplexed.
‘You think?’ Callie raised her eyebrows. ‘Perhaps it has a little something to do with the fact that Jarvis, who everyone says is a psycho, has our loved ones?’
‘If he has, he just made the biggest mistake of his miserable life,’ I told her. ‘But wait a minute …’ Playing a hunch, I checked the metadata of the recording. The location was given as Lusaka Green – where Jon had just been. I traced his current location, using a separate app.
‘Jon’s on the move, heading back into town. I’ll text him to meet us here at Ava’s. Then I’ll get Jade, my PA, to arrange to have the location in Lusaka Green checked out.’
‘How will you do that? They can’t search every building there.’
‘They won’t have to. My app can pinpoint a location down to one square metre. I can track every place Jon has been, and for how long, since I gave him the burner phone. He visited a location in Lusaka Green for just over fifteen minutes.’
