‘I know – and I’m grateful.’ I wrapped my arms round him. ‘So will you come with me to talk to Eva Foxton?’

Sonny drew back, his expression resolute. ‘Sephy, you are not going anywhere or doing anything for the rest of the night without me by your side. That’s a promise.’

I raised an eyebrow, but he wasn’t going to back down. He wasn’t happy about what I was doing. I knew he wouldn’t be, which was why I’d tried to do as much as possible without him knowing, but if I was going to go and see Eva then I’d rather not do that on my own. Eva Foxton’s reputation cut a lethal swathe as it preceded her.

‘So you’ve made a suspects list?’

‘Yep, and I’ve been updating it all morning, based on previous conversations with the suspects and some more research.’

‘Let’s have a look,’ said Sonny.

‘Well, it’s not much of a list – just the people present at Dan’s dinner party and my impressions of the ones I’ve spoken to today or on the night Dan died.’

Sonny beckoned for me to hand over my tablet, which I did reluctantly. I really didn’t need him disparaging my efforts.

Dan Jeavons – dead piece of shit, roasting in hell.

Kellan Bruemann – ex-CEO of Bruemann Construction, eternal victim by all accounts.

Bella Monroe – Tobey’s ex. Scorned and bitter, unappreciative of her lucky escape.

Tom Jeavons – Dan’s brother. As naïve and as clueless as he appears?

Patrix Ellerman – scumbag elitist. Bad gambler. Would sell his granny for a slice of cheesecake.

Eva Foxton – mother figure to Dan. Reputation for being ruthless. Dangerous.

Owen Dowd – living piece of shit. Special circle of hell being constructed just for him. Enough said.

Jarvis – Dan’s ex-second in command, apparently recently demoted. Vicious bastard. Watch your back.

Tobias Durbridge – biggest piece of shit on the planet.

George – Dan’s butler, sweeping up shit.

Me – up to my neck in shit.

Sonny raised his eyebrows as he read. ‘That’s a lot of excrement flying about.’

‘As long as none of it lands on Troy. That’s all I care about.’

‘Well then,’ said Sonny, ‘let’s go see Eva Foxton.’

BREAKING NEWS. Two bodies found in abandoned house near East Gurendah Harbour

The bodies of two Nought men were found earlier today in a terraced house near East Gurendah Harbour, each man shot dead by an unknown assailant(s). A police spokesperson told the Daily Shouter that both were notorious underworld figures who were known to work for Dan Jeavons, also recently deceased. Their identities have yet to be formally released.
