  90. THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING

We got back into his car and sat in silence. His expression was stormy. Unexpectedly, he thumped the dashboard with the palm of his hand, making me jump. Then he started the engine and took out one of his phones, tapping on a couple of icons before putting it to his ear.

‘Who’re you phoning?’ I asked, when no explanation was forthcoming.

‘Jarvis Burton.’

Dan’s old lieutenant. ‘Why?’

‘To see if he or Eva ordered the hit on Shane.’

‘Would he tell you?’

‘Yes.’ Tobey was barely paying me any attention. His focus was on the phone call he was making.

‘Would Jarvis even order such a thing?’

‘That’s what I’m going to find out.’

I gave Tobey a cursory glance before turning to look out of the passenger window. There it was – proof, if any were needed, that Jarvis was in Tobey’s pocket as I’d suspected for some time now. Tobey had the guy on speed dial. How long had Jarvis been working for him, I wondered? Had their dealings started when Dan was alive? I still had Tobey’s case to present and win, so I needed to be careful what I learned about him. It was against the rules for advocates to wilfully deceive the court. I couldn’t very well present Tobey as squeaky clean if I knew otherwise.

I glanced at him. He might be a lot of things, not all of them savoury, but was he capable of murder? I wondered if Jarvis was the same informant inside Dan’s outfit who Jon sometimes worked with? Over the years, Jon had received some really useful information from his contact, information that had helped me to win more than a few cases. Till this moment, I’d deliberately never questioned Jon too rigorously on the source of the info. Bending the law was one thing, knowingly snapping it in two was quite another. The former I could just about accept as sometimes the only way to get justice, but never the latter.

Tobey hung up, frustration creasing his face. ‘It went straight through to voicemail. He must’ve switched off his phone.’

‘D’you think he had something to do with Shane’s death?’

‘I don’t know,’ said Tobey reluctantly.

‘Maybe he did the hit or at least ordered it because Shane took his place?’ I ventured.

‘Maybe,’ Tobey said evasively.

A quick glance behind and we were off. Once we were on our way, I asked, ‘OK, what do we do now?’

‘We need to let your friend Jon know what’s happened.’

I took out my phone and started keying in a message to Jon. A quick glance from Tobey was followed by a sharp rebuke. ‘Godsake! You’re texting him? Seriously? You’re going to leave a message that we’ve just found Shane’s body and are fleeing the scene? Callie, are you actually actively trying to put a noose round my neck?’
