“You’re the one that said we had to be fair, and everything had to be even. Those were your words, Ax, not mine,” she said, jabbing her finger into my chest hard enough to leave bruises. “You’re the one that is making sure she feels equal to me, which makes me feel a whole lot less important than I thought I was to you.”

Was this really how I was making her feel? I cupped her face in my hands, and she narrowed her eyes at me. “Look at me, baby. You are the most important woman in my life. You, Blaire.”

“Those are just words, Axel. Your actions tell a different story. You left me for hours on Sunday night to be with her. That was supposed to be our alone night together. Then you stayed with her all night Monday night. That was after you left me in the fucking middle of oral sex—but not before you came down my throat. And you chose her over Carrie today and skipped out on dinner with us tonight without even a goddamned text.” Jesus. When she said it like that…

“God, you’re right, baby. I’ve been such an asshole.”

“Yeah. You have. And why are you paying for her apartment anyway?”

“Because she needs somewhere to live, Blaire. I can’t abandon a pregnant woman carrying my child.”

“Why not? You did it with me,” she said softly.

Ouch.

Just rip my fucking guts out, then.

“That’s a low blow. If I had known—”

“You did know, Axel. I told you. And do you remember what you did? You slapped a few hundred dollars on the dresser and told me to take care of it. Yet when Milan shows up pregnant, you’re the most proud, excited man on the planet, running off and playing house with her. How do you think that makes me feel?” Her moist green eyes were censuring me with the weight of a thousand tons.

“I know this isn’t an ideal situation, Blaire, but I’m doing the best I can here. I’m trying not to make the same mistakes I did before. I have to make sure this new baby has a place to live since Milan can’t work now that she’s pregnant.”

“She can’t work? What does she do?”

“She’s a fashion designer,” I said.

Blaire just stared at me for a while before laughing angrily. “She can’t sit around and draw and look at fabrics because she’s pregnant? Are you fucking kidding me?” I felt my eyebrows inching closer together as she looked at me like I was an idiot.
