I headed north on Highway 6, where I would catch I-35 up to Dallas. I had been to the house once with Blaire, and I thought I remembered roughly where it was. If she was there, I would beg for her forgiveness. I had pushed her into an impossible situation, and I would spend the rest of my life making up for that if I had to.
A tear strolled leisurely down my cheek as I mourned the loss of a baby I hadn’t even known I wanted. Blaire’s baby. My baby. Our baby.

Present Day
I burst through the door of our apartment like a bat out of hell, my tennis shoes slapping noisily across the wide plank bamboo floor. I found my husband in our room with a glass of Château d’Yquem in his hand. “Here you go, sweetheart. Sip on this while you get ready. I already have your black Vince Camuto laid out on the bed. You want to wear the Louboutins or Manolos tonight?”
I glanced over at the Camuto lying on our perfectly made bed, the deep black of the dress contrasting with the dove gray of the down comforter.
“Hmmm, can’t go wrong with Louboutins, right?” I asked as I took the wine from my husband and took it into the bathroom. “Sorry I’m running late, but today was AH-mazing! I got to assist with an ACL repair,” I called, taking a sip of the wine before putting it down on the marble vanity.
“Whoa! That’s awesome, Blaire. You’re going to kill this residency,” he said, smiling from the door of the bathroom.
“That’s the goal,” I said, pulling off my tennis shoes and tossing them in the closet.
I reached for the waistband of my scrubs, and my husband Evan said, “I’ll wait in the living room for you. We have to leave in twenty-five minutes if we’re not going to be late.”
Exactly twenty-two minutes later, I had finished the excellent wine, curled my hair, touched up my makeup, and gotten dressed. Not bad, Blair, I thought as I faced the mirror to slick on a muted matte-red lipstick and put on my diamond Riviera necklace with matching earrings. Walking into the living room, I did a little twirl, and Evan stood and let out a long whistle.
“Wow, darling. You look absolutely ravishing,” he said, kissing me on the cheek.
“Thanks, babe,” I said with a grin.
He chuckled before slipping on his perfectly tailored suit jacket and guiding me to the door.
